DNA Puzzle
With so many WikiTreers delving into their heritage via DNA I thought it might be fun to do a word search coupled with fill in the blank puzzle. So, this is a 2 stager… First find the 10 words used a lot in DNA research then fill in the blank that gives the definition of each word. By the way, FTDNA is running a sale on all of its products right now. A good place to look for these terms is the DNA Project’s Resource Page: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:DNA_Project_Resources_Page
1. ____________________ are normally found in pairs; human beings typically have 23 pairs of these, 22 plus one that determines sex of the individual.
2. ______________ which is passed down from the mother to all her children, males and females.
3. ____________________ tests provide genetic matches from both father and mother sides of your lineage. However, generally, it cannot tell you which side the information is coming from.
4. ____________________ is a collection of people who share inherited traits from a set of closely linked alleles (genes or DNA polymorphisms) inherited as a unit.
5. ____________________ is donated from the mother to both her sons and her daughters. With a match to this, it can help eliminate some branches of your tree because a father cannot pass this to his son.
6. ____________________ often abbreviated as cm is a unit for measuring genetic linkage. It is often used to infer distance along a chromosome. However, it is not a true physical distance. It is defined as the distance between chromosome positions where the expected average number of intervening chromosomal crossovers in a single generation is 0.01.
7. ____________________ is the process of matching to 3 or more people (not close siblings or parents) on a specific chromosome with a minimum of 15 cm and 700 SNP range. This is used to “prove” relatedness.
8. ____________________ is when two or more people share an overlapping of at least 7cm (some are now saying at least 15 cm) and 700 SNPs on the same chromosome.
9. ____________________ traces only the male line of a male individual. When testing the Y-Chromosome, there are two types of tests, short tandem repeat (STR) and single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP). STR tests are best for recent ancestry while SNP tests tell about more ancient ancestry. The higher the number of markers tested the more complete the results but also, the more costly the test.
10. ____________________ occurs when people intermarry repeatedly with others in a closed community. When cousins marry close cousins the same DNA is introduced to offspring from both parents. This is seen in small geographically remote groups as well as groups created by marriage or religious affiliations who only marry within their respective members. Some Jewish and Amish groups share more DNA and more small segments of DNA than people who are not from their communities. Often this results in matches that look closer than they really are.
