I'm trying to find the father of George Washington Harris (Harris-31748 – my great-great grandfather). According to family history, he never knew his real father, as his mother bore him out of wedlock in October 1862. She was only around 15 years old and family lore suggests the father was a census taker or government worker of some kind.
Though in one marriage certificate George Washington Harris lists "Wash. Harris" has his father, in another he lists no father at all. I have a letter written by his granddaughter Myrtle Harris Hess, who suggests his true father was a man who went by the name "Cobb" Maynard. However, his real name may have been Will, she writes.
In my research, I've found two Maynards who fit the profile – Colbert C. "C.C." Maynard (b. 1843, KY, son of Allen and Nancy (McColley) Maynard, m. Cosby/Causby Jane Lockhart, d. 1920, Beaver Pond, Mercer, WV) or William T. Maynard (b. 1846, KY, son of Alvis and Henrietta (Taylor) Maynard, d. 1-7-1920 Pike Co., KY).
Colbert Maynard marries a woman named Cosby/Causby Jane Lockhart in Russell County, Virginia, where George Washington Harris grew up. They're found listed close to one another in a book of Russell County, Virginia Marriages. It also seems very possible Colbert would have the nickname "Cobb."
William T. Maynard's mother is originally from the Honaker, Virginia area, which makes it very possible he could also be the father, as he would have been around the same age as George Washington Harris's mother.
Outside of testing DNA, I have no idea how to proceed with this information. Anyone else have a similar situation or are related to either Colbert "CC" Maynard or William T. Maynard, who can help?
