I'm so confused on how all of this works. Could someone please in layman terms help me to figure out content. If someone thinks we are related somehow how do they notify you on this? Where do I look for surnames that are of my family. So many times you join something like this and it becomes so confusing you just want to walk away from it. I don't really want to but I'm so confused could someone please help me. Now with that said not sure where to even look for the above questions I asked. Maybe someone from the Wikitree support team could email me and maybe help me out. I really like this site but need help please. I don't want to sound stupid or anything because I'm not. I just need some help please. Thank you Janis Heiden

Hi Janis, welcome aboard.  Hang in there for a while, the light bulb does eventually go on, but it might be in little increments here and there!  As Ros noted, the tutorials are a good place to start.  To address a couple of your specifics -- at the top of your profile page, there's a search box that already has the surname of your ID filled in.  You can use that to search the data base for all profiles with that surname, or you can enter any other surname you'd like to search for.  And under the 'Find' menu at the top right of this page, there's an item called 'Relationships' that lets you check whether you are related to any other ID in the data base.  That's only as valid as the data that has been entered so far by others, so it's not foolproof, but the results are often interesting.  If someone else thinks they are related to you, they would not necessarily need to notify you.  But from time to time distant cousins do find us on WikiTree by searching the web for some ancestor, and they do contact us through the e-mail link on our own profile.

Finally, since this is a free site, there's not a big paid staff available to help you or contact you.  There are volunteer mentors who provide some one-on-one help if you need it, but this (G2G Forum) is really the right place to ask your questions.  Good luck!

Dennis, you are explaining this to Janis, and you and I are 9th cousins. Hans Herr is our 8th GG grandfather.

Janis, Dennis gave you the perfect answer, but what I was going to say is that you will have better chances of relationship to other members after you have more profiles of your family entered. It does take a while. Hang in there.
Hey, you're right, that's what the tool says.  Chalk up another cousin found!  But I have to say, nine generations back is farther than I have been able to document on any line of mine, so we would probably need to look at all those relationships along the way and make sure they're valid.

Hi! and welcome to WikiTree.  if you go back to your profile, down the right hand side you will see two messages from Misty and Cindy which contain brilliant links to How-To tutorials to get you started.  Enjoy! smiley
