Completing a Merge

+6 votes
Merging is great as it reduces duplicates; however, there is more to merging than just merging two individuals!!!

there have been many questions/statements/etc regarding how to "clean-up" a merge, but many just don't do it!

The clean-up must include "merging" children, spouses, siblings, etc ++++ the bio and source data.

It can be so easy to do this at the time of a merge or at least make a note to self that a completion of the merge is still to be done.

Doing a complete merge will enhance the integrity of WikiTree and help all of us.

John the individual merging the profile should at least clean up the duplicate information.  Arborists merge a lot of profiles & should be removing duplicate data. If they spent 10 minutes on each profile  merged few merges would be completed. Duplicates are the biggest problem on WikiTree. WIth the recent merge change numerous people just started merging profiles like crazy without editing the profile post merge.

A lot of times a new wikitreer completes a merge.  They may not be comfortable merging relatives or even know  to merge the relatives.

When you see a profile in need of cleanup note it on the bulletin board. You might also post a link to the merge & biography help pages.

Actually what I have been doing is "suggesting" merges of duplicate individuals that occur from a merge.

It's just frustrating to be seeking "family" info and find a big list of unmerged individuals that are a product of a previous merge.

enough to drive an old man nuts!  Well my wife says I'm already nuts so I guess that doesn't apply.
I am in the process of cleaning up biographies of some of the families I have merged.

Sometimes, if there is an active manager involved, I will pass it along to them with a message (such as "Hey, there are a lot of children to be merged, do you want to do this or would you like me to do it?)

Otherwise, I try to propose all the merges that I can with clear duplicates, so that I can go back in 30 days to complete them. :)
