Christopher John Francis Edwards, served in Military

I have several sources confirm that my Great Grandfather Christopher John Francis Edwards born 12 November 1903 in  Ayr, Scotland served in the military, my Grandmother mentioned the Black Watch and his being gassed on the Some but I seem to remember her mentioning El Alamein as well.  (He would have Been 18 in 1921 so I suspect the first may have been incorect)  but her Sister said he was an Engineer. The only source I can find is on Ancestry which has a potential match in the South Wales Borderers.   Can anyone help me confirm which regiment he belonged too please.

The only WW2 records which are easily accessible online are fatalities and roll of honour. For other records you have to make a formal request, show your right to access and pay. Since Christopher seems to have spent most of his adult life in County Durham you might try the DLI to see if he served with them.
