How may I find a death certificate with Book and call numbers?

Question

I am  trying hard to find George Andrews hatfield EVANS death certificate. I can't positively identify a correct birth date or death date. I am hoping that this reference will lead to a birth Certificate. and or birth Certificate.

For those without Ancestry look-up it says. 

George A. (listed under Evans subtitle) 62 (age at death) Vanderburgh Co. IN. Book O Death Certificate # 30876 

I would like to be able to see a death Certificate with More information.

62 was not his age at death, it's the volume number containing his certificate.  Scroll to the top of the image to see the column headings.  Also, that is definitely the 1927 index.  George's entry is on image #188.  Image #8 is handwritten, "1927 A-Z."

Since he's from Kentucky, search for "Kentucky Vital Records".  Every location is different but you should be able to find a procedure.

Even though he lived in Ky most of his life he died in Indiana. So, am I right in thinking that his death Certificate would be found inIndiana?

That's right. You mentioned a birth certificate in the first paragraph, and I didn't make it to the second where you're also asking about a death certificate.  They would be in the jurisdiction of the event.

Hi Pam,

You will have to order the death certificate from Indiana Vital Records.  The certificate number should help that process.

I have a lead on it.  Ancestry has the certificates as well as the index.  Unfortunately, George's certificate might have been indexed incorrectly either by Ancestry, or by Indiana, or both.  I found a certificate with that number, but it was in Marion county for someone else.  You might be able to find it by browsing through the Ancestry images.  I think I would try buying it first.  Good luck!

Thank You all so much...I did try going through the book that had the real death certificates. I spent about 3 hours on it until I got tired. There didn't seem to be no ryme or reason to the order on the books. Every county was ran together and the counties were not in any order I could figure out.

I did know that Ancestry does have the Vital Company to find and send copies for personal use. I have not had luck with them every time though.

You're welcome, Pam!  Vital Check has never worked for me.  You probably have to mail a check to Indiana State Dept of Health (see link, above).

There is something weird in the Ancestry death certificate collection.  I could find certificates for some of the people in the index, and their names and certificate numbers matched the index you linked.  But I couldn't bring up any certificates for people listed in roughly volumes 60 through 64.  Maybe those volumes were destroyed, or never digitized?  Hope not.  The ISDH people should know.  Good luck!

Thank You so much for Your link and comment. I am Georges 3X's great Grandpa. That site wants all records to prove who you are and You have to be related...I am but how do I prove that? 

His whole life to me is elusive. I think Wow! this should provide me with a link that will give me his exact birthdate and death date...I thought this was the key! shakes head. I guess I'll give a link to my ancestry account or put all my links on here.

Pam, the website makes it sound like you have to prove all that, but the records are open now because he died so long ago.  You should be able to order the death certificate with minimum documentation.  I suggest you call them for clarification of their requirements.
