Hi Gillian,  This looks a real possibility. There is a frank Gillard in Liverpool but Iv not been able to put a direct connection between them, this may be the link. Thanks :-John
You are most welcome, I enjoy a sourcing challenge :)

Hi Ros Thanks for your time, Henry John Gillard is Francis Walters brother, and my grandfather, I know a lot about him through personal contact, and my mothers and sister  when I was a child

Couldn't find anything on Francis ...

There are a couple of transcription errors on the census. Amy's birthplace is Miles Platting and Mary Cade is actually Eade.

Hi Matthew Id got both the typos thanks, I think the Southport lead is my best bet, as Francis is staying with a Bolton lad, and I know there were no other Francis Gillards born in Bolton around 1884

It may be something or nothing but a Francis W. Gillard married in Croyden, Surrey in 1920:

Marriages Jun 1920

Gillard  Francis W  Panowski  Croydon  2a 862
Panowski  Wilhelmina  Gillard  Croydon  2a 862

And also a Frank W. Gillard married in Wandsworth in 1918:

Marriages Sep 1918

Gillard  Frank W  Guy  Wandsworth  1d 1143
Guy  May A  Gillard  Wandsworth  1d 1143
by Brenda Butler G2G6 Mach 4 (42.3k points)
Unfortunately the one that married in 1920 was a different person:

Name:
Frances Walter Gillard

Gender:
Male

Age:
28

Birth Year:
abt 1892

Marriage Date:
22 May 1920

Marriage Place:
Thornton Heath, St Paul, Surrey, England

Father:
 Walter Hugh Gillard

Spouse:
 Wilhelmina Panowski

Reference Number:
2955/1/13

Source: Surrey, England, Church of England Marriages, 1754-1937
Hi Brenda, I had followed Frank and Wilhelmina, and then found they had no connection,  but thanks for your time and effort.

Hi John

There's a second marriage in my post in 1918 in Wandsworth to a May Guy.  Wasn't sure if you'd spotted both!

I was also thinking about WW1, is there a chance he signed up and was killed? CWGC WW1

I'm assuming you've also thought of immigration records?

Brenda

Hi Brenda, Seen a F.W.G. in WW1 got medals in Royal Engineers, but cannot put him there, the second marriage in 1918 I think Iv checked that but give it another look, and yes done the immigration side
