General Index to Deeds, Mathews County, Virginia, 1866-1955 - I have the White surname section

I have images in my database of all Grantor/Grantee property transfers for the name White in Mathews County, Virginia from 1866-1955. Other names include Whitlock, Whittaker, Wheatly, Whitley, etc. The vast majority (95%) are of the surname White.

July 2021: Wanted to post an update here. I've visited Gloucester and Mathews counties several times since this date, and have acquired a surplus of additional names such as Armistead, Billups, Borum, Dixon, Diggs, Jarvis, Kirwan, Machen, Miller, Marchant, Minter, Matthews, Moss, Owen, Pritchett, Respass, Ripley, Ransone, Shackleford, Sadler, Sleet, Soper, Thruston, etc.

I also have tax rolls from 1861, and the marriage registry on file now for 1866-71.
Happy to give anyone information and/or post these images on request should I find a match.

My husband's family is from Mathews.  His grandmother was Eva White (Armistead).  Her father was Virginious Eugene White and grandfather was William K. White.  Anything you might have for them is much appreciated. :)

Hi Caryl,
I don't see any entries in the Grantor Deed Book for any of the above, although I don't have the complete books, only the White section.
There are several entries for an Elva, but not Eva.

In the General Index to Deeds - Grantee,
~Dec 3, 1868, Book & Sale, Book 1, Page 625. Joshua Gayle & Wife to Wm. K. (White)
~Dec 8, 1871, Book & Sale, Book 2, Page 382. Joshua Gayle & Wife to Wm. K. (White)
~April 12, 1875, Book & Sale, Book 4, Page 49. Joshua Gayle & Wife to Wm. K. (White)
The same date there was also a transfer to Samuel B. White from Joshua Gayle & Wife. Book 4, Page 48. This could indicate a family connection to Samuel B.

I also have a Samuel B. White in my family. However, I don't believe he's an actual, biological child to Francis T. & Rebecca White. He shows up in the 1900 census in Baltimore, Maryland with the family, claiming to be the "head" and "son" of Rebecca and Francis, although he is never is any other census enumerations with the family. I am looking for a potential father to Francis T. White, and I believe it could be a William, or Thomas.

Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for the information.  I will go search through the information I have on the Whites and see what connects.  I appreciate your help.

Found an interesting article in the Mathews Journal.

Page 3, June 29, 1905, in the local "goings on" section in the town of Bohannon: Miss Martha Minter has returned from a pleasant visit to New York, and was met on Saturday last in Norfolk by Misses Lillie and Eva White, who will accompany her to Charlottsville to attend the summer School of Methods.

I think that could be his Grandma.  Thanks so much.

Caryl, I've located additional information:

In the General Index to Deeds - Grantor,

~Jan 28, 1896, Book & Sale, Book 11, Page 227. Wm. K. (White) & Wife to Florence B. White & Children.
~Jan 28, 1896, Book & Sale, Book 11, Page 228. Wm. K. (White) & Wife to Wm. M. White
~Jan 28, 1896, Book & Sale, Book 11, Page 230. Wm. K. (White) & Wife to Georgie E. White

That is his family certainly!  Thanks again "M". :)
Hi Caryl,
It's been a while! However, the research has never ceased. I've recently been retracing some members of the family and came again to William K. White.

I'm sure you're aware at this point (perhaps not, and if not, perhaps someone else can benefit) that William K. was a Civil War Soldier, and enlisted on July 20, 1861 by Colonel Bohannon. He was discharged by reason of age. He married Susan A. (Susanna) Down (b.1831, d.1910). They lived in Mobjack, Virginia on a peninsula known as White's Neck. When I visited for the past 3 years, there are many references to the Whites in this area, including a cemetery called Providence, which has many White members buried within.

On April 8, 1871, William buys 6.625 acres from Joshua Gayle and Sarah E. his wife. The property adjoins his own (William's) and included everything except the fence, which Joshua was supposed to move "when convenient".

William's parents were Dudley White (b.Sept. 30, 1780, d. 1853) and Rosanna Hudgins (b.Jan 6, 1791, d.1860). Dudley's parents were Edward White (b.1751, d.1809) and Pamela (Pembroke) Singleton (b.1762, d.1813, m.1778). Edwards parents were William White (b.1709, d.1796) and Elizabeth Bartlett (b.1715, d.1760., m.1749)

Above them is speculation at this point. There are many William Whites which people (in my opinion) fantasize about tying to William White of the Mayflower.

Another William K. White is also in the area, known as William Kitson White. William Kitson is Dudley's brother, and also a son of Edward and Pamela, and would be your William K's uncle.

Hope this helps!
Matt
