I have found so many Mary Jane McCarthys coming to Australia from Tipperary! A Jeremiah McCarthy was witness to her first marriage to Thomas REED in 1853 in Wollongong NSW. A brother perhaps? I have looked for him but no real luck. Found one died unmarried and parents unknown! Then lived with Warry till his death in 1880 and remarried in 1882 to Thomas Evans.
Mary was not known to let the truth hamper a good story and brought her children up the same way.Almost everything in her obituary was not true. She was neither literate nor numerate and her age went up and down seemingly at random with the birth of each of her 10 children. I have found Warry spelled 7 different ways!
On one child's birth certificate when she was living with Henry Warry as if married,(no marriage record has been found), she states her maiden name as Owen but on the other nine she was McCarthy. Her obituary states she came to NSW with her mother, Mrs Owen but I can find no record and the given arrival year of 1807 at aged 5 is clearly incorrect. Her age at marriage to Reed was 16 in 1853.
