I am working on the completion of several supplemental applications.  I am also assisting both family and friends to get their first applications into DAR.  What can I do when I know the family connection but do not have the proper documentation at the Patriot?  I need a will, old family Bible, or something "legal" for my Shockley family of Virginia and my Flater family of Indiana and Maryland.  Does anyone have access to the Flater Family of Carroll County, Maryland book?  Thank you.

Hi there, fellow Texas Daughter! :)

The general answer to your question is go from the known to the unknown - just because you "know" it's that family doesn't mean that it is. Censuses, wills, deeds, etc are the way you need to go. But:

First, keep in mind that, in general, lineage books aren't acceptable documentation because of the lack of citations for the information within them. You can use them as research road maps, but not as source material, and take them with big grains of salt. Those books are notorious for being wrong. But even if they're sourced, you always obtain/submit the source docs, not pages from the book.

Second, if you haven't already, I really encourage you to take the three GEP classes to have a good handle on what National requires. I look at them as the way to get inside the minds of the genies - what is it they're looking for? It's not hard, just specific, and a change in mindset re genealogy. Where can you look when Bibles and wills aren't available? How can you tweak what is available to prove a generation/a link/a patriot? They're super useful.

Third, your best bet is to go through the "back door" of Family Search and go through the unindexed deeds and wills to find what you need. Bibles aren't that common, really (which is a total bummer); the majority of how I've connected generations comes from doing slogging through that stuff. Also, don't forget your genealogical and history societies that may know about things that aren't online.

And last, make use of the worksheet that is on the National website. I'm a huge fan of it. It keeps everything straight and makes sure you cover all your bases, especially those pesky connections between generations.

If you're going to Fall Forum, I'd love to meet up with you and talk. :) I'll be at Deb Duay's workshops - I hope you're going even if it's just for them. Her stuff is GOLD.

Thank you so very much dear fellow Texas Daughter!!  Your answer is so good and complete!!  I do not think that I will be able to make it to Fall Forum but with your suggestion, I am going to see if I can make it.  The trip is not far from Wimberley to Austin.  I am going to print off your answer and re-read it again and again.  I am planning to start the three GEP classes this fall.  I finally was able to start and prove my DAR last fall and learned so much from the New Member Course so I know these will be great.  I am also learning WikiTree - never quit learning.  Look forward to meeting you some time and communicating more!!  Hope you have a great weekend and stay cool!!  Hugs!!
FamilySearch has wills; you'll need to know where to look--Carroll County didn't exist until 1837; any wills before then will be in the will books for Baltimore and Frederick Counties.
Please forgive the delay in thanking you for your most welcome response.  I appreciate all guidance and suggestions.  I am told that there is a good resource book entitled "The Flater Family of Carroll County, Maryland" that covers the Flater family even prior to when Carroll County was formed but I am having problems finding the book or someone to do some research in the book and share.  This will happen some day.  Thank you again and have a great weekend.
