Rec'd message: what does it mean? [closed]

After creating a profile for someone whom I know is deceased but I don't have documentation of it, I noticed the system made the profile private.  So I put unknown for the date of death and indicated that the person was deceased.  After saving I rec'd this msg "Privacy level changed. Profiles of non-living people cannot be Unlisted"  OK, so she's 'non-living' but still has to stay private?

Also, I had put her married name as 'unknown'; decided that was a bad idea, but the system won't let me remove it.  When I remove 'Unknown' the system automatically puts in Anonymous and I don't want that either.  What to do?  Just delete the whole profile?

When you first created the profile with no death date, WT assumed the person was alive and set the privacy to Unlisted.  When you clicked the button to indicate the person is dead, that conflicted with the existing Unlisted privacy setting.  You can mark the person as non-living, and change the Privacy setting to anything other than Unlisted, and the messages should cease.

'Unknown' is by policy the last name used on profiles where the last name is not known (usually that's a maiden name rather than a married name).  But your profile has a Current  Last Name, so I don't understand that issue.

Thanks you both for your responses.  You enabled me to fix the privacy issue!  Now I've dug around a bit, found her husband's name, so gave her a married name.   And the title of the profile appears correct, but the first line under it says "Mary Anne Prescott (Prescott) Chubeck formerly Powell"

Prescott is part of her given name and was the preferred name she used.  Is putting that in ( ) the normal way to indicate a preferred name?  (Also I gave her husband's name only with initials as he is still living.  Should I remove the marriage info altogether?)

Janie, you currently have her first name as Mary and preferred name as Prescott.  Preferred name is supposed to be the first name she was known by and is normally the same as her first name.  You have her middle name as Anne Prescott.  Please tell us:

  1. Is the first name she was given at birth Mary or Mary Anne or something else?
  2. If her first name is Mary Anne and her middle name is Prescott, then Mary Anne can go in the first name field and also the preferred name field and Prescott can go in the middle name field.
  3. If it is something different than that, please let us know exactly which name parts belong in which name fields and we can help you sort out how to enter it.
I think I've got her profile fixed now.  Apparently I didn't save the changes I made yesterday.  And I would never have thought to put the first two names in the window for 'first name'.  Thanks for your help!!

The system automatically changes the privacy setting to that when death information is entered. You can change it by going to her privacy tab and manually set it to open or whatever you wish. Concerning the married name, if that is the box that indicates current name, it requires it to be filled in. If you had not changed it to unknown it would have likely already had her maiden name in that box. So you can leave it as anonymous or put her maiden name back in if you are not certain or have no proof of spouse. I'm still learning too but it's a lot of fun along the way!
