The John Mapes I am looking for is shown in the 1850 census at Amherst township, Erie county, NY at the age of 70.  His wife is Elizabeth, age 40; with Jackson age 17; Eliza age 9; Mariett age 7;  Harriet age 4, and Racheal age 3.  My grandfather James was born to this family in 1850.  It appears he was born around 1780 in Orange county, NY or New Jersey.  Some have placed him as the son of John A Mapes born August 19, 1761 at Blooming Grove, Orange county, NY.  They show him with a brother William and another unknown sibling.

I have John Mapes listed as the son of John Mapes and Margaret Remington. The following printout shows his wives and children that I have been able to locate, followed by sources of information..

     1.  John1 Mapes1 was born in 1780 at Orange, NY.2  He was born in 1788 at NJ.3  He married Elizabeth Finch, daughter of (--?--) Finch.  He married Mary Winslow.  He married Elizabeth Carney.  He died after 1862.

He lived in 1840 in Clarence Twp, Erie, NY.  John and family were in Amherst, Erie Co., NY in 1850 where John aged 70, is listed as a laborer.4  They moved to Lockport, NY about 1852. Originally birth date same as father's; John may have had 3 wives and died after 1860 census in Lockport.5  He was a wood sawyer in 1855 at Lockport, Niagara County, NY.5

Elizabeth Carney9 was born circa 1810 at Erie Co., NY.  She was also known as Elizabeth Cassey Probably not a name that was used during her life.10  She was also known as Elizabeth Carey.5  She was also known as Cordelia Carney.11

The six known children of John1 Mapes and Elizabeth Carney were as follows:

vi.    Charles Mapes7 was born in 1862.  He died on 27 May 1907 at Buffalo, State Hospital, NY.  He was buried at Bowler Family Lot.
