Why didn't the system fix this merge and what should I do aboutfixing it

+5 votes

I manually corrected a merge a few weeks ago and I was told I didn't have to the system would correct it, so why didn't it correct this one and how should I fix it

to me

A merge of Judith Martain (Martain-11) and Judith Martin (Martin-13484) was just completed by Julie Mangano.

Please see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Martin-13484 for the merged profile.

Now that the merge is complete it's important to integrate the merged biography and sources. Even if Julie has already done some editing you'll want to doublecheck the basic data and appearance of things.

There is always manual work to be done to tidy up the biography and sources after a merge. What were you expecting the system to fix for you?

Do you think the merge should have gone the other way so that Martain would be the last name at birth? If so, the system will not fix that problem. The person doing the merge needs to determine which is the correct name.

No I was basing it on the numbers. I had not considered the name as a factor. I expected the merging machine to flip it to the lower number.

I had been told the number would correct the merger  that I did not have to go in and manually correct it, so I was asking why didn't it do that.. So I would know in the future. During the time this person was alive they spelled their name the way I had it

Thank you for your answer.
The lower number applies only when the LNAB matches.  When they don't match (Martain/Martin), you have to indicate which way to go.  If Martin is the correct last name, you get the higher number in this case.  It's Martin now.  If you change it to Martain, WikiTree will assign her a new ID, the next available Martain number.  We users have no control over the numeric portion of the WikiID.
