Hi Mags, I don’t have find my past but have ancestry. The images of the 1841 census are available on there too; unfortunately the images do not show relationship to head in this cenus. As the first official census it was improved in 1851 to state the relationship status of those listed under the head of household. It can be frustrating, but generally I have been able to find othe sources in parish records to either prove relationship or disprove any alternatives.

There are two records for the same Elias in England Births and Christenings 1538-1975. Both Christened on the 11th November 1838 in Great Wishford, Wilts. One states his middle name as Snook and one as Smith both cite his mother as Elizabeth Mitchell.

Without delving any deeper I would hazard a guess that he was born out of wedlock to Elizabeth Mitchell, daughter of Henry and Betty Mitchell and was potentially raised by his grandparents. His fathers surname may well have been Snook or Smith.
