Alexander Macpherson from the Tarbet Hotel near Loch Lomond

I am researching and looking for Alexander Macpherson. I think he was my ggg grandfather. He was born 1804 in Laggan, Inverness-shire. His wife was Janet Cameron. in 1854 he moved to Tarbet, and ran the Tarbet Hotel, near Loch Lomond. Now called the Bay Tarbet Hotel. Alexander had about 8 children I think and one branch in Ontario, Canada. His son A. H. Macpherson took over the Hotel. I am wondering what happened to the children and when the family gave up the running of the hotel. Does anyone have any information or related.

I have an ancestor [[Macpherson-924|Ewen Macpherson]] born 1816 in Laggan Parish of Andrew and Ann McPherson.  Ewen had an older brother named Alexander born 1815.  Ewen and his family emigrated in about 1861 to what is today Bruce County, Ontario.  I don't think this is a match for you but if you come across any of these name in your on-going research, let me know.

Thank you for that. No I do not think this is the correct person. But I will let you know if I do come across these ancestors. Cheers
Although Alexander did have a son - Ewan Cluny Macpherson, Born Blair Atholl and who moved to Canada. Alexander moved from Laggan as a young man to Perth and married Janet Cameron, ran the Atholl Arms hotel, then moved onto Tarbet  and Arrochar where he ran the Tarbet Hotel. Your Macpherson could possibly be another relative.
Thanks for the additional information which I have carefully noted in case I find someone in the future that might match this family.
Ewan Cluny MacPherson was my great grandfather.  Born in Blair Atholl, Scotland in 1851 to Alexander MacPherson and Janet Cameron.  They operated the Tarbet Hotel.  (I have information showing  A.H. MacPherson, proprietor in 1887).  Ewan settled in Harrison Hot Springs, British Columbia, Canada in 1888.  On December 27, 1890 he married Jane Vaudine Caroline Agassiz from Agassiz, Brithish Columbia.  They had 3 daughters, one of which was my grandmother.  Jane passed away in June, 1916 and Ewan passed away in June, 1932.

For the benefit of whomever might stumble across this thread in the future, the Ewan Cluny MacPherson mentioned above is NOT the same person as the [[Macpherson-924|Ewen Macpherson]] mentioned above.  As at 11 Jan 2022, Ewan Cluny MacPherson does NOT seem to have a WikiTree profile.  However, there is a FamilySearch profile () with lots of sources for him and it all seems to match what has been described above.

Thank you for that info, with parents naming their children after them it does make it confusing.  I am new to this site and I am trying to trace my origins, both on the MacPherson side and on the Agassiz side.  Any info is helpful.

Thank you -I will need to look more closely at this. Thank you for the help..
Alexander, died around 1861 and Janet moved back to Perth area with her children. I think then the older son stayed in Arrochar and took over the hotel, he was a wine merchant, A.H Macpherson. I am not sure though, how long he had the hotel for. A Mrs Logan seemed to take over the hotel early 1900's. But I am trying to find out if the Macpherson family kept it on till the 20's.

Hello, I have some information on the Tarbet Hotel near Loch Lomond and the Macpherson family.

My great grandmother, Jeannie Robertson Dewar came to Tarbet Hotel as governess to the children of Aeneas H Macpherson sometime approx 1892 and married Aeneas H Macpherson on 27 Feb 1892 at the Station Hotel in Perth, his wife Janet Milligan having died leaving the two sons Alexander Aeneas Cameron Macpherson b.1883 and Hugh Archibald John Macpherson b 1884.  Jeannie and Aeneas Hugh Macpherson had a daughter Violet on 1 Feb 1893.  She died on 26 Feb 1919 in the flu epidemic.  Aeneas died on 23 Sept 1896 at Gartnavel Hospital, Glasgow.  I think Aeneas b. 1840 was the eldest son in a family of 9 children but I have not researched any of them apart from Aeneas.  My great grandmother Jeannie must have then left the hotel and she re-married.  I have the Will of Aeneas somewhere if this would be of interest.
