How do I fix a profile that has a wrong mother and do it right wikitree way?

Question

This profile below was last edited by someone else and there evidence is suspect they have the wrong mother. I know the mother and father of this shepherd and have evidence. Can I change this or what should I do to not cause a mess and conflict. Father John Shepherd Jr. and mother is a Phoebe alright but that is where it end the wrong dates and last name not sure of we have plus we sure that this Phoebe is buried in Deep Ford Hill Cemetary in Wilkes County, NC.

Andy, you’re in the right track. I know this Shepherd family. It was the Mastin name that caught my attention. Plus Halifax and Wilkes counties. Would you please keep me posted on how this goes? I’d appreciate it. I’ll look in my database to see if I have anything.

Also, you’ve created a profile that already existed for John Shepherd. The dates match exactly. You’re going to need to initiate a merge.

My branch of these Shepherds left Wilkes for Macon County in the 1820s.. We need to put our heads together.

Andy, you’ve created a duplicate profile for John Shepherd. There was one already up. The dates match exactly. These need to be merged before you go any further. You can clear up the marriage afterwards.

My Shepherds moved out of Wilkes to Macon County in the 1820s. There are several people on WT who are descendants of Old George of Spotsylvania County, Va. We are working on correcting and sourcing the older families as much of what was put out on the Net long ago has perpetuated mistakes. We need your help!

Kudos on wanting to fix this without conflict!  Best practice is to private message the profile manager and make your case, including your sources to support your conclusions.  If that doesn't work, there are additional steps you can take, but start there.  Good luck!
