Will Edit-Bot Rename Virginia County Projects to Conform One-Place-Studies Naming Standard?

The OPS project has a standard that the Name end with "One Place Study".

For Virginia, we have tons of counties with OPS FreeSpace profiles that do not conform.

E.g., the space Accomack County, Virginia needs to be renamed to "Space:Accomack_County,_Virginia_One_Place_Study".

Can we get the EditBot to go through and rename each County Space page to conform by adding "One Place Study" at the end of each page's name?

Is there a reason to include the word "One" in the space page titles?  Since it's not in the category names, there's going to be no end of confusion.
I now see that some of the categories do include "One".  But the parents are just "Place Studies". Now I'm even more confused.
I'm also confused about the hierarchy.  Eg the South Pool space page isn't a member of Devon Place Studies, it's only a member of the South Pool category, but the Virginia pages are members of Virginia Place Studies and don't have their own place-specific category.

Each One Place Study should have its own leader, who should find it only takes minutes to change it.

Remember, this is changing the name of the page itself (which you do by using the Edit tab), NOT changing the name of the URL.  That is staying the same so as not to bring the whole category structure down. Looking at Virginia Place Studies, you only have 81 counties where this will need to be done.

Give me a couple of hours tomorrow, and I'll put on my big girl panties and get on with it. wink

I just did Accomack and it took me 15 seconds.

Ros, I have to ask WHY make this change to add OPS to the end of a title. I'm not trying to be confrontational, I just want to understand the rational behind this.

I am adding Category:Arkansas Place Studies to the county pages I created, all 76 counties.

It took you 15 seconds to do 1.  Arkansas only has 75 active counties and 1 defunct.  I'm about half way done going thru the list to adding categories. However, texas has over 250 counties. At 15 seconds, thats 3750 seconds.

This discussion is about free-space pages, but I'm often puzzled when One Place Studies set up category structures that are parallel (and often essentially identical) to the place category structures for the same places. My puzzlement increases when the parallel categories are populated with the same set of people profiles. Why can't a One Place Study use the same place categories that the rest of us use?

Thank you Ellen.

3750 seconds.  Divided by 60 to get minutes = 62.5 minutes.

Divided by 60 to get hours = 1.04 hours.

Colour me scared. cheeky

Ros, an extra hour here and an extra hour there. But you still haven't answered the question I asked, WHY? What purpose is this serving?

And I"m on my 3rd day of adding verifying that 3 cat tags are on the county pages.
Actually, I *have* answered it.  Three hours ago!  Scroll down and see where I put all your questions together and answered them. And keep reading - several other points have been raised - and answered.

The job was never intended for Project Coordinators.  It was intended for the profile managers who run each individual Study.

It's entirely up to you (Project Coordinators) to decide whether you want to do it, or you want to ask your One Place Study managers to do it.

Apologies for the delay in replying - timezones meant that while you were asking your questions, my timezone dictated that I was sleeping! smiley

If you have a specific question, please don't comment - 'ANSWER'.  If several people comment, then my answer to a specific person can get lost in the list.

I'm going to make several separate ANSWERS to the different questions.

1.  This is something from the mists of time.  They were always called 'One Place Studies', but somebody (or somebodies) forgot, and made other categories 'Place Studies'.  The same seems to have happened with 'One Name Studies' - somebody somewhere called one 'Name Study', and it stuck.
I agree it has the capacity to cause confusion.  But the alternative was to change the category on thousands of profiles, so this compromise was accepted.  Change the name ON THE FREESPACE PAGE ONLY, and the category page and category tree would remain the same.  It's just the same as someone changing the name of their Study to "South Pool Families" (for example).  The category South Pool One Place Study would stay the same, so would the category page Category:South Pool One Place Study.

2. Same answer as above. sad

3. If you look at the South Pool category page, you will see that it *is* categorised within Devon Place Studies. So what you are saying is that that category should be on its freespace page as well.  OK, done.

Please don't be confused.  Be patient instead.  We're doing the equivalent of a ten thousand piece jigsaw puzzle here.  Don't expect results overnight. smiley

1.  After much discussion, the One Place Studies Project leadership decided to include the phrase "One Place Study" in the name of a One Place Study to
a) mark it out as a Study separate from the location's information page
b) give the Project more cohesion, rather than just being something silent in the background which formed part of a category tree and not much more

See a page of the One Name Studies Project's index of Name Studies:
https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Category:One_Name_Studies&from=A
(and yes, I am working on fixing the incorrect names.  It's a big job)

2. 3750 seconds.  Divided by 60 to get minutes = 62.5 minutes.

mark it out as a Study separate from the location's information page

The impression seems to have gone out that the "location's information page" should now have One Place Study added to its title.

Not quite sure how that impression got out.  The original post:
https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/665753/one-place-studies-in-the-us-and-beyond

says
"Old Studies can do this as an edit to their freespace page".  That's STUDIES. Not 'ordinary location pages'.
"Old One Place Studies can do this as an edit to their freespace page."

So if Space:Accomack_County,_Virginia is a One Place Study, where's the location information page?

And should Category:Accomack_County,_Virginia_[One]_Place Study exist?
1. If it's NOT a One Place Study, then it needs to be removed from 'Virginia Place Studies', the OPS box removed, and the wording "One Place Study" removed, so it would revert back to an ordinary location page.

Then someone would decide they are going to run an OPS on that county, would create a new Study called "Accomack County, Virginia One Place Study" - just like the other thread said should happen with new Studies.

2. If it IS a One Place Study, then it stays within 'Virginia Place Studies', the OPS box stays, and the revised wording stays.  As to a separate information page for the locality, you'd have to speak to the Virginia Coordinator.

It may be that it will take more than 15 seconds to change the wording, while it is evaluated whether or not it is actually a Study and/or needs a new, separate OPS page.  Right now, it's in Virginia Place Studies, so it gets the revised wording.
There's an objection in some quarters to adding more text content to Category pages.

Which is obviously why these county space pages were created, in bulk.  Not because anybody was really planning to do them as proper Place Studies.

They have the same PM on all counties Statewide.  Lynette's already mentioned that she had 76 Arkansas county pages.
I think people are assuming that the instructions apply to every page with the project box on it.  But the project box is probably on a lot of pages it shouldn't be on.
Following on from what I said above:
If it's in "Virginia Place Studies", and it's got the OPS project box on it, any person would consider it a One Place Study. Logical?

If actually it's not a One Place Study, then they need to get those things off there a.s.a.p. (remove it from the category structure, and remove the project box)
What does logic have to do with WikiTree?  Nobody is going to do dozens of county-wide One Place Studies covering a whole state.  Information pages yes.  But One Place Studies are always going to be a random scattering.

Thousands of pages have the OPS project box (not sticker).  Most of them are person profiles, which makes it hard to count the space pages. Since there's no project account yet, seems like it would be easier to use the old template name for the sticker and choose a new name for the project  box.

Which pages should appear in the alphabetical listings on Category:One_Place_Studies?
I know nobody is likely to do dozens of county-wide One Place Studies covering a whole state.  That was done by the US History people years ago without proper consultation.

Thousands of pages in 'real' One Place Studies still have the project box rather than the sticker.  It's a slow job changing them.  Lots of person-profiles in One Name Studies still have the project box, rather than the sticker.  Lots of person-profiles in the Notables Project still have the project box, rather than the sticker.  I'm sure there are others.  We do them as we find them.

At the present time, there is unlikely to be a Project account, as we do not fill the criteria (yet). No further comment, please.

The Project Box is OnePlaceStudy, the sticker is One Place Study.  Maybe we can get them renamed to OnePlaceStudyBox and OnePlaceStudySticker.  But that's for Leaders to decide.

The pages that will appear in the alphabetical listing will be all of them (eventually).  That is why I am going round adding Category:One Place Studies.  This is a big project.

You and me both. smiley

I think it is possibly because a location page is just really an information page about that location.  End of story.

A One Place Study on that same location has the potential to be much more.  It can have a more genealogical slant i.e.not just looking at the place, but at the people, what they did, who they married, where they went etc.  The location page just looks at the place. So it is similar, yet subtly different.  And, of course, having the name "One Place Study" marks it out as being separate from the location.

Just for the record, here are two examples of situations where separate, parallel category structures have been created for One-Place studies in the United States:

* Two category structures for Stonington, Connecticut: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Stonington%2C_Connecticut and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Stonington_Connecticut-Study. When I inquired about the logic of this one place study and its "study" category, multiple people informed me that this separate categorization was entirely appropriate (and possibly necessary) for a one-place study.

* Separate categories for https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Bryan_County%2C_Oklahoma and  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Bryan_County%2C_Oklahoma_Place_Study. (Until I edited the categories less than 24 hours ago, there were no connections between the county category and the place study category and its subcategories.)

It's unfortunate that there's "Category: Bryan County, Oklahoma Place Study", singular, one comma, and "Category: Bryan County, Oklahoma, Name Studies" plural, 2 commas, since they both seem to be containers, not actual studies.

Since a good place study will have a whole bunch of space pages, I'd make a category to put them in.  But the object is defeated if they get lost in a big bunch of people-profiles added to the same category.

On the other hand, I'm a believer in templates setting categories, if only to keep track of where the template is.  So if people are going to put the sticker on all the people...
Actually it's a puzzle that Category: Bryan County, Oklahoma, Name Studies exists.  There's a bunch of these, all empty, and likely to stay empty for a long time, because only a small fraction of name studies get subdivided down to that level.
I don't believe that people are using stickers for the people included in one-name studies. I just don't understand why it's deemed necessary for the same individual people to be categorized in both Stonington, Connecticut and Stonington Connecticut-Study.

There are numerous categories comparable to Bryan County, Oklahoma, Name Studies. I suppose that if someone comes along with a One Name study relevant to that area, there will be no uncertainty about where to categorize it.

Ellen, if you are really having difficulties with the dual categorisation, may I suggest that you contact Natalie Trott of the Categorisation Project, who may well be able to explain it to you.  I obviously wasn't clear enough. sad
