Notable Anglo-Saxon historian Frank Stenton (1880 - 1967)

I created a profile for eminent Anglo-Saxon historian Sir Frank Merry Stenton, KB, for the Notables Project. Shortly, I'm going to add his wife, medievalist Mary Stenton. I need some help for sources for Sir Frank.

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography has some good info, but I do not have access to the full article. Other Online resources do not give much more than the Wikipedia article. What sources could I add?

Also, is there a project that Stenton would fall under besides the Notables? I've already added them to trusted list.

Anyone wishing to improve the profile, have at it! Many thanks!

I have his classic Anglo-Saxon England on my bookshelf (yes I have read it). I have the ODNB article. It's mostly about his career but I'll check the profile.
I wish I still had my copy. It was a great read, even if required. ‘Course, it wasn’t such an old book when I was in college 30 later. It shows the impact of Stenton’s research that another book hadn’t come along even that late (mid 70s).

Deb, it’s a shame that the gray box for best answer doesn’t cover everything you’ve found. It’s all just wonderful. Did you see how much older Frank’s dad was than his mom? Second marriage, acc. ODNB.

Guess I’d better get busy adding in his family, too. Thanks you sooo much, Deb. You’re the best!
Thanks, Pip. Once I get going, it's hard to stop sometimes. lol
His mother, Elizabeth, was the second wife of Henry.

Henry's first  wife was Frances Cooke, they  married 12 May 1852

"England Marriages, 1538–1973 ," database, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N6J9-D7L : 10 February 2018), Henry Cawdron Stenton and Frances Cooke, 12 May 1852; citing St. Clement Danes, Westminster, Middlesex, England, reference it 5 p 147, index based upon data collected by the Genealogical Society of Utah, Salt Lake City; FHL microfilm 1,042,304.

Found the reference  to their marriage certificate in the catalogue to  the Family Archives,  several other dated documents about various family members are indexed.) https://www.reading.ac.uk/web/files/special-collections/Stenton_Family_MS_1148.pdf

Excellent, Helen! Thanks. Looks like the Frank Stenton “Project” has taken on a life of its own. Did you ever see the 50s movie “The Blob?” Boy have I got some work to do. Again, many thanks, for adding more to one of my history heroes.

Hi Pip

Frank would fall under the England Project. We also have a sub-project for historians in the pipeline which he would fit into.

Vivienne
by Vivienne Caldwell G2G6 Mach 3 (38.5k points)
Ok, do you want me to hang off assigning him until the sub-project is up and running?
We can add the sub-project when it is ready and I am sure there are other appropriate existing categories as well. Will Notables be co-managing this profile? Their project box is there already but if they aren't listed as a pm (profiles with project templates need to have the project as a pm). If they decide not to England would be happy to manage this profile.
Notables is on the trusted list, but I hesitated adding them as a PM in case there was another project to take Stenton on. As I understand it, I think the Notables would rather not take on someone if they fit better in another project. Should I take the Notables Sticker off Stenton’s profile until a determination is made?
You could change the Notables template to a sticker and if they don't want to manage Frank the sticker can stay anyway. England would be the appropriate project.
Ok, I changed Stenton from category to sticker. I’m comfortable for him being in the England Project.

You’ve been an excellent help, Vivienne, and I am most appreciative.

Many hands make light work or add piles more to do depending on your perspective. cheeky

His death date was 15 Sep 1967 - see The Times Monday Sep 18.

His burial was at St James, Halloughton, on Thursday, Sep 21 1967 - see The Times Sat 23 Sep.

Unfortunately neither those nor his obituary give exact place of death, nor where he married Doris. So for the moment we are stuck with Wokingham registration district.

N.B. Doris died 4 years later in Reading. I think it is pretty certain that he died in Reading.
