Military troops relevant to community/family

How does one motivate illustrious military historians to tie military to their home communities whose military service is otherwise- why’d they do it?! Histories seem to lack relevance to motivations without family/community to create country for which there is patriotism?!

Without knowing the time-period or country involved, this is sort of a confusing question. Often times military service is tied directly to economic circumstances. There are some good books on the subject. One in particular is "All for the King's Shillig" by Dr. Ed Coss. It is England during the Napoleonic era.
