I was told along time ago ,about 50 years ago why. It was because, when they came here. The king of England had made proclamation, that no more than 2 MacGregors could be in one area, at any given time ,So they did a  name vayation on the name,Thinking  that England was go to be in control of the states. So they could keep the name alive and not have to carry their wives names, as many of them did.

After the king banned the MacGregor name, most took the name of Gregg or Grigg. I have not found any references to the name Gragg in Ireland or Scotland before the 1900’s. After the Gregg clan emigrated to the New World, whether one of the colonies or Canada, the change in the “E” or ”A” in the name was mainly due to the dialect and where whomever was recording something thought they said Gregg or Gragg. So the Gragg name was started. Certain branches stayed with the Gregg surname and certain branches chose the Gragg surname.

When Robert Gregg Sr moved to Tennessee, some of his children/siblings moved to the Carolina's. This was the main split between the two surnames, although now they are all over the country in both spellings.

Well it was actually James VI of Scotland who banned the clan name MacGregor or Gregor completely. Yes, he happened to be King of England as well, but was clearly acting as the King of Scotland here. It was an act of the Scottish Parliament not the English one. The clan warfare had got too bloodthirsty even by Scottish standards.
