Requesting some assistance in interpreting USArmy unit designation.
I have had very little information regarding Charles Wilson Bailey[Bailey-12992] military service.
Request Pertaining to Military Records (SF180) is used to request information from military records, but National Personnel Records Center found no records - possibly destroyed or not enough information was provided.
I just today found some information from a family bible that I want to submit to them as additional search information, but I'd like it to be in the correct format.
The information in question is "565 Company E 29th QM Regt."
This could be his final unit or first for all we know.  "IF" this was recorded correctly in the bible, I'd like to submit in correct format. I've searched for some 29th Quartermaster Regiment, but nothing helpful popped up.

We have an undated photo of him in uniform, looks to be around 20 yrs of age.
The time frame of his service would likely seem be around 1895 - 1930.
Seemed to have spent his career at the Presidio(SF, Calif), but may have been in Manila, Philippines for some period.

Harkening back to my original question: Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to use the bible entry "565 Company E 29th QM Regt." for submission to "Questionnaire about military service" ?

Greg,

I found this in the Archives:

https://www.eisenhower.archives.gov/research/finding_aids/pdf/US_Army_Unit_Records_Index.pdf

It's a listing of all the army units in service between WI and WWII. Both the 29th Infantry and the 29th Engineers and a Company E.

Years ago, I was looking for information about my grandfather's military service records. They were destroyed in the fire at the repository in St. Louis in 1973. I wrote to the US Army Military History Institute, Carlisle Barracks, Building 22, Carlisle, PA 17013-5008. They were able to give me information on both my grandfathers--the training camps they went to, where my maternal grandfather served overseas, where he suffered a gas attack in France, all sorts of information. You might try contacting them to see if they have more information.

There were conflicting serial numbers on CWB's military records; on his request for interment it was R-317616, and on his WWII draft card the serial number was U-2914. I believe the first to be correct, based on the number of digits in other servicemen's records I have looked up.

I had found the https://www.eisenhower.archives.gov/research/finding_aids/pdf/US_Army_Unit_Records_Index.pdf shortly after finding the family bible information. Frankly, I couldn't tell if there was relevant info in the doc - thus my question on G2G forum.

I appreciate the tip and will contact the US Army Military History Institute.

I agree that the draft registration number is probably not associated with actual military service, given his age - 62.

Thanks for all responses. I was helped especially by enlistment records that eventually indicated multiple enlistments, starting in 1898 and service in Philippines.  I have enough information to resubmit the request for his military records. I hope to eventually learn more about the "565 Company E 29th QM Regt" at the end of his army career.

I found a reference to the 565th Quartermaster Company here

https://sablan.house.gov/resources/honoring-northern-mariana-islands-fallen-heroes It's the woman fourth from the bottom. Marianas Islands. Other than that, the only references I could find to the 29th were an Infantry Battalion, Guam, and an Engineer Battalion, Hawaii.

I did look at the record for the request of interment in the Veteran's cemetery. It says that his dates of service were 10 Oct 1934-30 Sep 1937. The form is addressed to the Quartermaster General in Washington, D.C.

Also, I looked at his WWII draft registration card. It lists his occupation as a civilian watchman at The Presidio. I found some references to places you can write to for more information.

Thanks for the response. Where did you find the "request of interment"?

1934-1937, he would have been in his 50's. I'm sure his service was started much earlier. Charles would have been 60 when the WW2 draft commenced[Draft age was 18-41]. Perhaps you found a request for a different vet?

"I found some references to places you can write to"  thanks, can you point me to them?

I assumed you had the same information since the Company E, 29th QM Regiment is listed on the form. DOB 15 Dec 1879 in KY, DOD 2 Aug 1949. His age is listed as 62.when he registered on April 26, 1942. I found both his draft registration card and his request for interment on Ancestry.com, along with a photo of him at approximately age 46 with a large group of family.

Thanks for the response.
1) "I assumed you had the same information since the Company E, 29th QM Regiment is listed on the form."
I'm sorry, I don't know what form you are referring to.
2) "I found both his draft registration card and his request for interment on Ancestry.com, along with a photo of him at approximately age 46 with a large group of family."

I don't have access to ancestry.com, and don't consider that a source in and of itself. Do you have any access to any sources I might be able to see?

Thank you for your response. Can you please tell me the source and how I might access it?

I'm still trying to find pieces of the puzzle. He may have have re-enlisted

I have a photo of him in uniform standing next to his daughter (as described on the back of photo). She looks to be her early teens. We know she was born in 1906, which would make the photo date around 1920 (give or take).
I found it on fold3. I searched for Charles W. Bailey with service dates between 1899 and 1939. It is also possible with the advent of WWI he may have re-enlisted.

EVERYTHING is becoming monetized.

Sigh.
