September 28 - October 1 — the start of Family History Month — is our third annual "Source-a-Thon".

This three-day event is for a good cause (sourced genealogy!) and there will be over $3,000 in door prizes donated from around the genealogy community. It will be lots of fun.

The event will go from Friday, September 28 at 8 AM (ET) to Monday, October 1, 8 AM (ET).  Note: We've changed the start/end time from last year.

Last year we had almost 500 participants and sourced over 53,000 profiles! Can you help us do even better this year?

To register, post an answer in this thread with something like "Yes, I'd like to participate in the Source-a-Thon."

If you know what team you'd like to be on, be sure you include that in your answer. If you don't know what team, share where you are from or where/what you like researching so we can pick the best team for you.

Please reply as an answer not as a comment, so we can assign you a badge number and make sure you get counted.

Thanks!

Registration will open September 1.

'''Register for the Source-a-Thon first!!''' Please Go To [https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/674783/have-you-registered-for-the-source-a-thon-yet-2-registrations This G2G Post]  to register by '''ANSWER-ing''' at the top post of Source A Thon and tell them you are on Team Tennessee. Then you will be assigned a “race number.” This number is very important.  If you do not get one, let me know. Teams fill up fast so please don't wait to register, and after about every 80 registrations there will be a new registration G2G a link to the new thread will be added to the old G2G post.

In the meantime, maybe you could post with an answer to introduce yourself?

What Profiles count as Unsourced for the Source-a-Thon

How to participate..Source a Thon Challenge tracker makes it easy

This G2G question and answer thread  is our team's place to ask questions, give advice, see updates and cheer each other on.

Thank you for volunteering to help and have chosen to join our team!!! I appreciate your help while we try to "Source up" the Tennessees and all their "unsourced" profiles on WikiTree"!!

Hello Team Tennessee Volunteers participants!

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

This year it's easier than ever to join in the fun. Here's a handy 'how to' video to help you out

You can use any profiles from the Unsourced profiles categories, as well as a couple specific Data Doctor suggestions lists. For us these are Unsourced Tennessee Profiles, here are all DBE Unsourced Tennessee profiles.

1. Choose a profile.

2. Add a good source. For more information on sources, see our Sources help page

3. Remove the {{Unsourced}} template or [[Category:Unsourced Profiles]]
categorization, if there are any.

4. Click the "Challenge Tracker" button at the very top of the page and choose the "Source-a-Thon" option.

Move on to the next profile!

QUESTIONS

Any questions can be asked on your team chat thread here or on the official G2G Source-a-Thon Question thread It will have other helpful links and announcements, as well.

If you're a Facebook member, please tell your friends and family what
you're doing this weekend. This helps spread the word about WikiTree.
You might want to post with your "race bib" number, like this:
1.) Right-click the URL for your number above to go to it. Right-click
on the image and select "Save image as...".
2.) Make a mental note on where the image is being saved, e.g. to a
Downloads or My Pictures folder on your computer.
3.) Go to Facebook.
4.) At the top of the status/sharing box click the "Photo/Video" link
and select "Upload Photos/Videos".
5.) Find the image where you saved it.
6.) Add text like "My weekend: Participating in the Source-a-Thon, the
first-ever genealogy sourcing marathon at WikiTree.

http://www.wikitree.com "

Participation will be very easy this year. Last year everybody had to maintain their own counts. Now we have the Challenge Tracker.

You might have already noticed the button that appears after saving a profile. Just click it and select the Source-a-Thon checkbox. Data Doctor Aleš does the rest. He's maintaining the counts on his WikiTree+ server and will enable us to see live statistics and leaderboards throughout the weekend.

The only hard part is the fun part, the genealogical sleuthing.

For the record, here's an example of participation steps you can try:

  1. Select a profile from the (for us) DBE Unsourced Tennessee Profiles or the Unsourced Tennessee category.
  2. On the profile's pull-down menu select "Research."
  3. Select where to search. For example FamilySearch.
  4. If you find a source, record it on the profile, copy FamilySearch's handy "Citing this Record" citation and paste it into a set of <ref></ref> tags.
  5. Remove the {{Unsourced}} Research Note Box and save the changes, if there's just the {{Unsourced}} or {{Unsourced|Tennessee}} template it would be nice and very helpful if instead of leaving no template at all, you all could replace the {{Unsourced}} or {{Unsourced|Tennessee}} if it is appropriate and if there's no other template or Project covering the profile by the Tennessee Project template {{US History|sub-project=Tennessee}} .
  6. After saving, click the Challenge Tracker button and record the point.
  7. Return to step one and repeat until eyes glaze over.

In short...after adding a source to a profile and saving you will notice this field click Challenge tracker

It Takes you to this field, select Source-a-Thon (it will be there during the Source-a-Thon) and when done click add action..that's all :)

Hi Tennessee team!  I am from Ohio but all my relatives come from Monroe, Cumberland County and surrounding areas of TN!

Count me in!
Hello, Teammates! I am Alice Ann (AA). I am Tennessee born and bred, but grew up in Mississippi and now live in Baton Rouge, LA. My father's family first moved to Henderson County in 1829. My mother's family is from Jackson, by way of Haywood/Hardeman on one side and Humphreys/Robertson/Coffee on the other. I have been doing genealogy since the early 1960s, visiting courthouses, cemeteries, libraries, and family members. Now I can get online and make mistakes a lot faster! Ha!

Looking forward to cleaning up some profiles this weekend.

And I still haven't figured out how to "Answer" instead of comment!

Hi Alice Ann,

It took me awhile to figure out how to "Answer" also ---

If you look at the line between where it says: "asked Aug 26 in the Tree House by Linda Barnett..." and the first comment you will see:

                                                              flag     answer    comment

Just click on the answer instead of the comment

A fellow Tennessean

Hi, I'm Jill.  Oddly, I have no ancestors in Tennessee either.  I usually do a lot of sourcing on Canadian profiles, but I was invited to this team... so here I am :) :)  And I'm happy to help.  Since I don't have family in Tennessee, I've been poking around on some Tennessee profiles to get to know the various sources.  I might do some sourcing outside of the state as well - we'll see how it goes and where the trails lead.  Looking forward to the challenge!
For the color chart, I am not seeing any colors added, so I am having to check change history on each file before I work it.  Is there another way to see who is working what and the finished ones on the list?
I am in now sorry for not doing till today but my real life got real hectic this Monday morning before this started about 3:00 a.m. Monday morning I am going to try to do some. Next year I will captain but since I will have been moved by the end of this year I will be able to be a real captain at those a - thons next year. I promise. Thanks Gigi for stepping up for me. I will explain what is going on later after.
We are doing great last year at the end with both Team Tennessee I and Team Tennessee together we had a total 937 sourced and this year with Team Tennessee I they have 712 and Team Tennessee II they have 902 even with Team Tennessee II they have almost the total from last year so we are doing better than last year with the two team the total is 1,614. Keep on going and for your information I am renaming the team - Team Tennessee Volunteers for the Clean - A - Thon and Source - A - Thon. I will get in on the first day of them and source till the end if ends at a good time. So I will do a lot better starting next year.

Hi Team!

My Baker line started in Virginia and moved through Tennessee.  It also seems like every name I trace in my extended family from California and Texas always leads back to Tennessee, so I am always on the lookout for info when I am looking at seemingly unrelated files.

Greetings from North Carolina!  Strangely, I have no kin in Tennessee at all, but I live about an hour south of Johnson City if that’s a good excuse.  I just have a ‘stash’ of unsourced TN profiles that I’ve been working on so will continue.  I participated in the last Source-a-Thon, so I plan to contribute again.

Hi everyone,

I am Lance. My great grandfather was born in Tennessee. It is there that I think my research are going to someday turn up a non paternal event.

I have been unable to find his paternal grandparents on a census nor identify his paternal grandmother's maiden name.

I know I am somehow related to the Swafford/Lee/Howard families, but there are so many of them I have been uable to narrow my search.

Regardless,  I look forward to helping out as much as possible.

Hello Everyone,

I am so excited to be a part of Team Tennessee! I am a Mississippi girl born and raised. I'm married 37 years, have 1 child, and 2 grandchildren.

I have been doing research sincerely 1995. While Wikitree connects me to more than one Magna Charta signers I just feel that work has been done.

I am about the Pioneer ancestors who much like the primitive people who signed that charter started from scratch right here in the good ole US of A. My heart and mind love history and those ancestors of all of us who had to chop a tree out of the way to lay notched logs to provide shelter for their families and the women who loved enough to make that perilous journey with them.

I know we will clear ALL our Tennessee unsourced profiles plus continue on with other southern states! I look forward to getting to know more about all of you and how you work but mostly I am interested in learning more about the Pioneer people of the state of Tennesse.

Hi all,

I am Alexandra and all my ancestors seemed to have begun in Pennsylvania--no Tennesseans at all, that I know of. But I am glad to help Team Tennessee. I think working on a different geological area will help me be less distracted and more objective!  Glad to be with you all next weekend.

Would anyone like to be my co captain in case life gets in my way like it likes to a lot of the days?
by Living Barnett G2G6 Pilot (502k points)
Hi Linda,

I’m not sure how much time I’ll be able to devote either, but am willing to help.

Emily
You can with Gigi Tanksley. She offered to help. That will be a relief on me. Because my dad takes dialysis 3 times a week which is Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and a lot of time I take him and get him and bring him back. Plus he as vascular demetia and he has had that for 4 years and been on dialysis the same number of years. He is 86 years old and he is an handle full for my mom who has problems her self that is why we had her have an house behind Tusculum college built so all of us kids will be near them to help her. Also me and my sister will be 15 minutes away in Jonesborough. I will be living in her old house on her 10 acre lot. I will be moving first by the end of next month I will be up there. Then slowly we will be moving my parents up so they will hopefully be moved up there by the end of the year.
I discovered that I don't need you to be co-captain.
Okay looking forward to a good weekend

Hi All,

My family is from Northeast Tennessee, currently have many family still in the Bristol/Bluff City area of Sullivan County. My roots include Carter, Washington, Greene, and Blount Counties. Some of my ancestors migrated to North Carolina first others from Virginia. Most of my family settled in the general area before or soon after the Revolutionary War.

I will be working on Tennessee profiles, my family profiles, and some of the profiles that I have recently adopted.

Some family surnames are Boy, Ford, Cox, Sharp, Sanders, Vance, Millard, Smith, Giesler/Geisler, Buchanan, Alison, Moore, Riley, Mallonee, Miller, King, Doak, Hall, Boyd, Allison, McKinley, Yoakley, Rhea, Hicks...
by Emily Holmberg G2G6 Pilot (155k points)
Emily, I have roots up that way I am even in the middle of next month moving up to my sister old house in Jonesborough. Then we are going to get my parents moved up in Greeneville behind Tusculum college after that by the end of the year. I still have relatives in those areas. My roots from my dad's and mother's sides migrated in the same area. Some of mine went down to where Carson Newman area and Rhea County also. I lived in Bristol from the time I was born till I was 5 years old when I moved to Athens, Tennessee. I have a lot of the same family Surnames we might be related. I have Cox, Sanders, Miller, King, Allison, McKinley, Giesler/Geisler,
Interesting - very possible there is a connection. I have a much more extensive family tree on Ancestry than I have had the time to build on WikiTree.

Did your Allison family marry into the McKinley family and are they tied to the Sanders in any way? I have Martha McKinley marrying Robert Alison (sometimes spelled Allison) their granddaughter was my GGreat Grandmother Elizabeth Deery Alison who married John Henry Sanders.

I lived in many areas around East Tennessee and remember driving by Tusculum College many times when we were driving to Bluff City to visit grandparents.

I didn't live in Bristol until 7th grade, when my Dad was minister at Anderson Street UMC. His mother used to say she lived in every block on Anderson Street - her mother was principal at Anderson Street Elementary in the early 1920s and my grandmother was a teacher there also.
My dad taught at Anderson Street High School.
I try to when I move up by the end of next month I will try to see if we are connect some how and let you know when I find out.

hello!

I am Lynn Massie  Skeen typing poorly from my phone.  Many of my people came from West Virginia, and I'm sure there are Tennesseans in the mix.   Thanks for having me on Team Tennessee.  I am not new to genealogy but a poor sourcer so hoping to improve, while hopefully contributing to the team.

Hello, I'm a transplanted Texan residing in Florida and ready to source a bit of Tennessee. This is the first time I'm actually trying to participate in one of these....I hadn't noticed the rules before. I have a line possibly in Tennessee Hilliards so this will be great to familiarize myself with the TN resources.

Is there a place I can store IDs / source links that someone can enter into profiles? Given that this is a 3 day event and my typing skills, it would be the most expedient method. I'm pretty good at finding information, it takes me days to put it in profiles.      Thanks, M Hilliard

The sourcing that I've done this morning is not showing up on the challenge tracker reports.(I am using the challenge tracker to track my progress)
by Jill Claus G2G6 Mach 2 (21.1k points)
I’ve done about 15 and none show up on the TN Team list.
We both show up on the new link :)
Robert, I worked steady and hard for 12 hours yesterday and when I went to bed mine where not right either.

Don't worry though they are counting. Every single one!  I am so proud of the numbers we put up together in Team II yesterday.

Hey, we are in 17th place. Not bad and if we work steadily today I think we can move on up a little.

You guys are champs to me either way!!
Thanks, but I’m not worried.  Whether they ‘count’ or not, at least they’re no longer Unsourced.  I won’t be able to get many done today or tomorrow, but    I’ll add a few more.
