Hi everyone!

I will be leading the Mighty Maple Leaves for the 2018 Source-a-Thon, as I did for 2017.  This post will serve as the main chat page for marathon.  You can see the free space page for the team here, which will include a listing of members, some helpful places to find sources, sources needed tables for unsourced profiles, and the like.

Please note that this chat page is not intended as an official sign-up or recruitment page.  When the G2G post announcing the event is released on September 1, please go to that post and 1) answer (don't comment) that you'd like to participate in the S-A-T and 2) if decided, indicate which team you'd like to join.

@ Steven-great question.  I know that there used to be two Canadian S-A-T teams, but they were merged in 2017 into just Mighty Maple Leaves.  I don't recall whether the other one was named Canadian Cleanup Crew.  In any case, for whatever reason the other name was used for this past C-A-T, as was done for C-A-T in 2017.
ok, Was just wondering because the Canada Cleanup Crew had a tab for C-A-T and when I hide the sheet it keeps getting re-opened.
I am hoping I made it to this team.  I feel I can help more in this area than anywhere else.

Good morning.  I received an email this morning with all the sourcing criteria.

Included was the following links:

Here is your team G2G chat thread: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/670611

I think this is incorrect.  Or am I wrong?  Thanks for the help.   sheryl

Hi Sheryl,

Yes, that was a mistake.  You are on my list, and you were included on the Mighty Maple Leaves official list sent out this morning.

Thank you Greg.  smiley

I seem to have run into my first snag in doing sources.  I hit a gold mine with the family name Hodgson in Saskatchewan.  They are an orphaned family but I have been able to source 5 of them so far.  However, I went back and looked at the first one Hodgson-395 and it has gone back to showing "unsourced".    Could someone please check this out and get back to me what I did wrong?  Thanks so much.  Sheryl
You need to remove {{unsourced}} from the top of the profile once you've sourced it.

Thanks Greg.  Don’t know how I missed that.  Changed it now.  smiley

Yes, I got that too. It has taken me a while to get to the right place.

Now that the Source-a-Thon is approaching, I would like to encourage team members to introduce themselves here and let us know what they would like to work on during the event.

I'll start by introducing myself.  More than half of my ancestry comes from Canada, with my Canadian ancestors immigrating to the United States between the 1890s and the 1930s.  Most recently, my maternal grandmother was born on Buckland, Québec, and left for New Hampshire in 1934.  I am currently planning to focus on sourcing profiles associated with Québec.

Greetings,

My name is Rick San Soucie.  My surname is one of the several variants of the Sansoucy name which derives from Quebec from the mid 1600's.  My ancestors emigrated to the US in the mid 1800's, and settled primarily in Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island and Missouri.

I look forward to helping with Quebecois sources during our Source-A-Thon this weekend.

Hi, I'm a newbie for the Source-A-Thon and I decided to join the Maple Leafs because I want to learn more about Canada, since I found out that I have distant relations especially to Ontario.

I'd like to see an (answer) thread where there are shown some links with possible sources, since it'll be difficult to find everybody unsourced in Census records or BMD records.

Hi Jelena,

Welcome to the team!  As Laurie points out in her post below, I've started a list of sources on our free space page.  It's definitely a work-in-progress.  If anyone has additional resources to add, they should feel free to do so.

Good morning,

I'm the Project Coordinator for the Ontario Project and Ontario Team. I live in Ontario and will be working, big surprise, on Ontario's unsourced profiles.

Jelena, I use Family Search for the Source-a-Thon. Greg has a list of sources on the team's free-space page: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Mighty_Maple_Leaves

I'd recommend watching the Source-a-Thon video before the weekend. It has some great tips. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbhcrvsoUVU&feature=youtu.be

Hi I'm Kyla,

I'm Canadian, born and raised in Vancouver BC. My mother's side is French Canadian. I will focus on a lot of Quebec profiles since I have access to French Canadian sources such as the Drouin.  I will also try to so some British Columbia profiles using BC vital records and family search and of course census. Looking forward to sourcing with all of you.

Hi I am Sheryl.  I was born and raised in Saskatchewan.  My ancestry is mainly in the prairie provinces.  My descendants came from Scotland, Denmark, Norway and the USA.  I am a newbie at this so I hope I can help in a beneficial way.   Thanks.

See you soon, Sheryl!
Thanks Laurie.   Wow, the more I read how to source correctly the more confused I get.   I have watched the video and read how to do thins but that is a lot to take in.  I sure hope once I start, that I accomplish something.  Right now, I am a bit overwhelmed by this all.
That's the way I felt when I signed up for my first Source-A-Thon. After asking a lot of questions, I finally got the hang of it. So ask away. We're all there to help. Remember, even if you just add sources to a few profiles, that's that many fewer on our Unsourced list!
Thanks Laurie.  I really appreciate your words of encouragement.  Sheryl

Hi,  My family has lived in Ontario since 1817 with some branches heading west.  I will not be able to assist Friday afternoon and evening or Saturday afternoon.  I will try my best with the time I have available.  Go Mighty Leaves!

Hi, I am a real newbie with Wiki Tree and am still learning to navigate but I am willing to sign on this weekend to help with the source-a-thon. My grandparents families have all been in Ontario since early to mid 19th century so I will help with Ontario.

Hi Anne,

I believe today is the deadline to sign up for the event this weekend.  The sign-up page can be found here.

Hi! My name is Greg. (Not our fearless leader, Greg, though apparently we are cousins  - 7th cousins 2x removed ...)

I have just recently discovered my birth family - and so have a whole new family tree to fill out now. To help manage it, I decided to try out WikiTree, and have been focusing initially on my newly discovered French Canadian roots.

I'm going to initially add sources to the unsourced profiles in my own tree that sprout up from the Marcoux side (and branch from there), and then will continue to help out with other Quebec profiles as time allows.  I've a busy weekend with other events too, but will do as much of this as I can to help out Team Canada!  Go Mighty Maple Leaves!

- Greg

Sourcing is fun! I might start to "work" also as a sourcerer after the Sourceathon. Laurie, thanks for the video, I didn't know the research button, it really helps LOADS

BTW, I don't know why WT tells me to login when I go on G2G, but when I click there tells me: "You are already logged in." But when I then return to G2G I'm again kicked out. That might be something for the tech freaks of the forum. I don't belong to them

Glad you're enjoying it, Jelena. Odd about the log-in problem. I'm not a techie at all, but perhaps someone else will help out. You're wasting valuable time logging in! LOL
Hi Jelena,

I'm sorry to hear of your tech issue.  I would email info@wikitree.com about the problem and see if they can help you.

Is here in the team anybody with an access to the Drouin Institute?  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Potvin-384 is sourced with a source of them, but all her children (and it's a bunch of them) are not. We can source them by verifying the relationship between the mother and the kids, probably by using the source given in the mother's profile. That's at least what I assume.

And sorry, I STILL get kicked out of my login when I come to the G2G

Send me your email address please.  I have what you need.

Rick
I sent you a PM
Hi Rick,

It is not recommended to post your own email address in the G2G, as there are spammers who will take note.  You should instead initiate communication through private message instead.

Hello, fellow Maple Leaves!

I apologize for being a bit late to the party, but hopefully I can contribute to the team effort!

My mom was born in Quebec and my dad’s family is from Ontario. I have lots of experience researching both areas, but probably feel most comfortable with 1700’s/1800’s Upper Canada. I’ll just jump in somewhere, but please let me know if help is needed anywhere specific.

Thanks!

Meg

Thanks for joining us, Megan!  We have three days to source, so the timing of your entry shouldn't be a problem.  18th and 19th century Upper Canada sounds like a great location to work on.

I hope everyone is having a good time so far during Source-a-Thon!  I just want to point out that there is Sourcing Selfie post here that you should visit when you have a chance to take a break from all the great sourcing you're doing.  It would be great to see members of the Mighty Maple Leaves team share these photos during the event.  I plan to take and share one or two either on Saturday or Sunday.

by Greg Lavoie G2G6 Pilot (371k points)

Here's the selfie, as promised.

I sourced 100 profiles, now it's time for me to get a rest. (Where is the sleepy smiley when you need it??)
by Jelena Eckstädt G2G Astronaut (1.5m points)

That is super Jelena. smiley

Way to go Jelena!
