Hi there, just introducing myself!

I'm totally new and don't know what I'm doing! Sorry! I currently only use good ol' Google and FamilySearch but would like to learn how to research with more accuracy and organization. I have a particular interest in my Germanna, VA relations as well as possible Appalachian roots. No one in my immediate family has ever fleshed out my maternal side, so I'd like to concentrate on that, too.

Welcome! google books and family search are still my go to resources so nothing wrong with that :)
Hi Jen and welcome to Wikitree. What a great picture you have.
Hi, Jen, and welcome!

I edited your post and added a few tags to draw in some more people who can help you with your Germanna ancestors. I hope you enjoy your time here. You've already got a good start by posting here to introduce yourself! :-)

Welcome Jen!

If you need anything or have any questions don't ever hesitate to ask!

I recently discovered that FamilySearch has research strategy articles.  Under each state, in the research wiki, are links to articles on researching that state, as well as research tips and strategies.  Lots of good how-to.
Hi Jen & Welcome!

There are several WikiTree members interested in Germanna, Virginia - see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Germanna%2C_Virginia to find some of them.

Cheers, Liz

Hi and Welcome to the Club Jen,

First thing is, you should be contacted by a WikiTree Greeter.  They will be your best friend as you get used to WikiTree.

One of the easiest things to do is just Click on your Last Name on your Profile. A new page will open with a listing of all of the Fisher Profiles presently listed on WikiTree. In the upper right corner are variations of possible different spellings of the name over the years. After you add a Profile with your Mother's Maiden Name, go ahead and try that there.

Look at the top of the page and there are different links to do many different things. I would try to explain them, but there are way too many and it is so much easier if you click on them and find out what they do yourself. Experience is better then reading the ramblings of an old man. LOL

This will help get your feet wet on what is available on WikiTree and what you can do.

Though I will be vilified by many who hate the idea of paying to look up records, if you are really new to the game of genealogy, I strongly suggest at least a one month purchase of an Ancestry Com membership.  It has records on different data. Many the same as Family Search, but also many they do not.  And I find their Search and therefore Hints a bit easier to use than Family Search.  It is a great place to get started as it is geared for the Newbie. Use it to get the ball rolling and back it up with research on Family Search as well as WikiTree.  One thing to watch out for is what is called an Ancestry Member Tree that will appear in your Ancestry hints.  Be wary of those as the folks who made them, sometimes they don't make the right choices and can lead you off on a wild goose chase with an incorrect ancestor.

After you get started, then you transfer the Ancestors you have found to start building your WikiTree Family Tree here.  The beautiful thing about WikiTree is the connections you can make with people as you add your ancestor's Profiles to WikiTree. I have found more than a few cousins through WikiTree I never knew I had.  And the G2G Forum is the place to go as a new genealogist as the folks here will bend over backwards to help you.  Even if the question is about Ancestry or Family Search or whatever.  Remember, everyone here started out like you.  A yearning to find where you came from.

All the best and have fun.

Yes, that is an appropriate warning that probably should be on the home page :)
