Need some help from Civil War buffs, google's not helping me.  I know there was a battle in Marietta GA in June and July of 1864 but I have someone who died in Marietta in January of 1864.  Any clues on what was going on then? Maybe he just got sick?

It's possible he died in the Confederate hospital in Marietta.  There were no specific large scale battles in or around Marietta in January 1864 but there may have been minor skirmishes as there were large numbers of Confederate soldiers in the area as battles would be fought in the area beginning in April/May and concluding in July 1864 with the battle of Atlanta.  There was a military hospital in Marietta, see article: Confederate Hospitals (https://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/history-archaeology/confederate-hospitals) which includes a list of the locations of Confederate hospitals in Georgia:

Army of Tennessee hospitals were located at one time or another in each of the following Georgia cities and towns: Adairsville, AlbanyAmericusAthens, Atlanta, Augusta, Barnesville, Calhoun, Cassville, Catoosa Springs, Cherokee Springs, ColumbusCovington, Cuthbert, DaltonEatonton, Forsyth, Fort GainesFort Valley, Geneva, Greensboro, Griffin, Kingston, LaGrangeMaconMadisonMariettaMilledgeville, Milner, Newnan, Palmetto, Resaca, RinggoldRomeThomaston, Tunnel Hill, Vineville, and West Point.
