Strange automatic privacy change

I added a profile for my friend Marci, who asked me to work on her family, and included her email address.  As expected, it started out Unlisted.  When she accepted the invitation, her privacy automatically changed to Private with Public Family Tree, she became manager and I was still on the trusted list, although no longer a manager - all this, too, was as expected.  So far, I have added her father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, all of whom are Open.

When I added her as her father's child, her profile automatically became Unlisted again and now, since I am no longer manager of her profile, I can't change the privacy back to public family tree.  I can have her log in and change her privacy, but ...

Why did this happen?  Isn't there a rule that members cannot be Unlisted?  If so, it seems like a bad thing to automatically change a member from Private to Unlisted when the first connection from the member to a relative happens.

PS  Please note that her name still shows as manager of her father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, even though her profile is Unlisted!

Hmm, I wonder if it is because you added the father after she became a member rather than her adding him. Still seems very odd and definitely shouldn't be happening since you're still on the trusted list. Maybe you should add bugs to the tags. frown

Aha! It's because technically speaking "Family Members" who have not volunteered or signed the Honor Code are not considered active members so they can go unlisted. She can change her status and then sign the Honor Code if she wants to remain listed.

Still shouldn't happen automatically because a change is made.

Good idea - THANX, Deb, I just added bugs.  The order in which profiles got created and connected is:

  1. I added Marci and her email address.
  2. I added her great grandfather.
  3. She accepted the invitation, becoming a family member, but has done nothing else here since.
  4. I added her grandfather.
  5. I added her father.
  6. I added a child to her father and entered her profile ID for it.  That's when privacy changed to unlisted for her.

I'm sure (at least, I hope) that I would not have been able to add her as her father's child if I were not on her trusted list!

Yes, I realize that family and guest members are permitted to be unlisted, but I agree that it shouldn't automatically change from public tree to unlisted just because she got connected to another profile here.

If she changes her privacy back - which I would expect her to be able to do - then I'm wondering what will happen when I add her mother (also non-living).

Another - probably easier solution, since there are still questions about how privacy works, is for her to make me a co-manager of her profile so that I don't have to keep pestering her.  Maybe someday she'll become interested in doing genealogy, but for now she's only interested in having her genealogy documented here, which I offered to do for her.

Yep. I'm a manager on my husband's family member account. He's interested in what I do but has no desire to do it himself. cheeky
