Is it possible to add a category of "wagon trains"?

I have an entire family in the works that traveled in the largest wagon train of the time, 1851, to the Willamette Valley, Oregon on the Oregon Trail. It's the "Keeney Wagon Train".  I didn't see other wagon trains, but wondered if this is a good category. Many people besides the Keeney family and relatives traveled in it; so there would be other surnames too. The matriarch, whose sons led the train, involved is Burkhalter-179.

What neat profile!  Thank you for adding such a valuable resource.

Mags has a really good idea of adding a page about this specific wagon train if you have more information on it you would like to share.  Otherwise you can just add it to the person profiles you have already made.

I probably would just call the category "Keeney Wagon Train" since that is the way most people here would call it.

Do you know how to make a category?

On Mary Keeney's profile page at the top of the biography box you would simply put the the following:

[[Category:Keeney Wagon Train]]

Categories are always enclosed in double brackets with the word "Category" followed by a colon.

Save your work on your profile and go to the public view of Mary's profile.  See how the category link is red?  That simply means that no one has made and saved that category before.

Click on this RED link.  This takes you to the new category page.  It will warn you in big letters that this category hasn't been saved yet.  So we need to do that!

In the text box you will want to link this new category to the category for the Oregon Trail that has already been made and saved.  So you put the following in this category's new text box:

[[Category: Oregon Trail]]

You can also add any information you have to the text box about this Keeney Wagon Train just like you add information on the biography box on the profile pages you make. That is optional and not a requirement.  However, it would be great if you would add the dates of the wagon train and the fact that it was probably the largest of the year on the Oregon Trail.

Then click the save button.  You have now made and saved a new category for our WikiTree!  Do you see how it nests your new category in the category called Oregon Trail?

Now go back and add that category

[[Category:Keeney Wagon Train]]

to the top of the biography box on every profile of the people you have who were on that train. This time when you go to the saved version of their profile the category link will be GREEN.  This is because you have previously saved that category.  Saving any category only needs to be done once!

Adding categories is fun and helps us organize the huge amount of information we have on our WikiTree.  Thanks for contributing!

Hello Darlene,

There is a category for the Oregon Trail [[Category:Oregon Trail]].  My two cents would be to create a Free Space Profile, Upper Right Menu > Add > New Thing

I would make the profile title, the name of the train, "Wagon Train, Keeney", This way it will show in the Category page under W for Wagon train.

Then add the category above to the description section of the Free space Profile.

Yell if you need help.
