Remarkable Genealogical Coincidence

+8 votes

Kindly consider these two gentlemen:

Henry Williams, born about 1815, probably in Ohio,

and Henry Williams, born in 1820 in New Jersey.

They only lived about ten miles apart, one in Olive Township, Meigs, Ohio, and the other in Lodi Township, Athens, Ohio.  Both married different women named Jane in Meigs County.  And both named their oldest daughter Amanda.

Disclaimer:  Henry #1 has a duplicate (my error), and there is a bit of conflation among the Henrys, Janes, and Amandas.  I'm working on that.  smiley

I have similar ancestors in my tree. Two cousins about the same age, both named Lucretia, but each born in adjacent counties, and lived and died in one of three adjacent counties during their lifetime. They are often conflated -- which is odd considering the children from each husband are all interspersed together in the timeline.

The sources connecting their fathers as brother are thin, at best.

I've seen it in my tree, too.  One of my g..gfs had a 3rd cousin with the same name, born within 2 years in a nearby Louisiana Parish.  Searching for one always brings up the other.  These two men appear to have been born in different states, though.  I suppose they could be related, but I haven't seen a connection yet.

I've seen other similar.  It's almost like names are "prophetic."  Maybe they are.  I know when one of my sons was born, I took one look at him, and decided the name I had picked was all wrong.

I've also noticed that people with the same name often live to be about the same age.  Like both my father, and his first cousin of the same name, died young.  I've seen many where one "John Smith" lived from 1800 - 1835 and another, unrelated, lived 1802 - 1836.  Sometimes I'm looking at veterans lists so there are a lot of people with the same name.
