Stuck on a John Smith

According to his marriage certificate the father of Frederick Charles Smith is John SmithI was hoping to find a connection to the world tree but there is very little to work with.

All I know is that this John Smith was deceased at the time of his son's wedding. His profession was 'Florist' and the wedding was in the UK so it's likely John Smith was also from there.

My searches bring up no clues. Should I give up on ever moving beyond this line due to the common name?

This case certainly presents some features of interest but surely the baptism image on Frederick's page shows his father as Joseph, an upholsterer?

Frederick's profession on the 1891 census is just "Cab proprietor".
Freebmd matches that with a birth reg, q1 1858 in Marylebone.

All I can find in Windsor is a Charles Frederick Smith, q4 1860.

I think this is him in 1871

because Walter James Coleman witnessed the wedding
