Can I have some help figuring out where my Great Grandfather Sherman Oakland Hess came from and what his family is like?

My Great Grandfather's name was Sherman Oakland Hess I.  From what I found on the internet his parents were William Adam Hess and Estella Pearl Cretcher.  This is all I know about his family aside from the fact that he cut ties with them completly.  There is no documentation, no family oral history, no photographs, nothing about what that side of the family is like, who they were/are... I'm curious!  What is my family like? Who are they?  More importantly I want to know if ANYONE knows what happened that made my Great Grandfather completly cut ties with his family.  Hopefully whatever it was it was not so horrible that people are still upset about it today T_T
