We have some newspaper cuttings dated 1898 relating to the Battle of Ombdurman. We know that the journalist who wrote them died that year however he was paid by his newspaper which must have had the copyright. When if ever does copyright evaporate  if the institution still exists? I haven't actually read the long reports as they do not interest me but they're probably of interest to someone.

Why not just quote the cutting? Then there is no copyright involved.

Copyright caries by country. In the UK it would be 70 years after the last author dies or 70 years from the end of year published if no author listed. In the USA it would be out of copyright if published before 1923.

So where was it published?

AND, depending on where you got it from, even if it's no longer under copyright, you may have user agreement issues that prevent posting copies of it to other web sites.
Probably not a problem. My husband inherited them. Manchester Guardian 1898. england
