Very interesting.  At first I thought it was some sort of abbreviation, like Chas for Charles.  Or Saml for Samuel.  It was written Er8, the 8 being his generation from the immigrant.

Very interesting! I haven't entered it in WT yet, but my wife is a Balch, having descended from Er's brother Joel. I am certain that she would prefer Joel as an ancestor rather than Er. Er could have had another brother, Ahem. Then mother could have called the boys " Joel, Er, Ahem! Time for supper!"

That was good! So much better than the Bort licence plate joke I was going to use. Sadly I've used that on Wikitree already. I need to keep myself from getting stale. I do have a reputation to uphold. =)
