Very interesting.  At first I thought it was some sort of abbreviation, like Chas for Charles.  Or Sam^l for Samuel.  It was written Er⁸, the 8 being his generation from the immigrant.

Very interesting! I haven't entered it in WT yet, but my wife is a Balch, having descended from Er's brother Joel. I am certain that she would prefer Joel as an ancestor rather than Er. Er could have had another brother, Ahem. Then mother could have called the boys " Joel, Er, Ahem! Time for supper!"
