Per findagrave: Merida Jackson "Buck" Mitchell was the son of Andrew Mitchell. He was born in 1833 in Smith Co, Mississippi. He had one brother, Byrd, and one sister, Eliza Berville. The family moved to Southwest Louisiana by 1850. Buck settled in what is now Cameron Parish (formed in 1870). It included southern Calcasieu Parish and western Vermilion Parish. He married Lavinia Patch about 1853. Buck and Lavinia had two children. A hurricane developed in the Gulf of Mexico and came ashore southwest of New Orleans. Buck held both babies above his head while Lavinia clung to him. As the violent rushing waters rose higher and higher, his wife and both babies were all swept from him and lost. Although unconfirmed, the most likely hurricane was the seventh deadliest in United States history. It occurred on August 10-12, 1856 and was a Category 4 storm. It leveled every house in Abbeville, Vermilion Parish. At least 400 people died by the time the storm ended.

Buck and his brother Byrd subsequently joined the Confederate Army and fought in the Battle at Sabine Pass, Texas and were discharged from the army there. Buck later married Melissa Jane Slaughter of Taylor, Wiliamson Co, Texas, born in 1844. They settled in the Bayou D'Inde area, near Lake Charles, and had three children: Arminta, Margaret, and John Robert. They later moved to Newlin, near Singer, in Beauregard Parish. Buck died in 1917 and Melissa died in 1928. They are both buried in the Magnolia Cemetery, Ragley, Beauregard Parish.

Contact Civil War National Archives, also on Ancestry.com,A Family

descendant has a story of his life.
I searched for his name on Fold3 and there were no results for the civil war.  However, that doesn't necessarily mean he didn't fight in the war - you should follow Wayne's advise and contact the Civil War National Archives.
Thank you for trying. We appreciate all the help with his profile
Thank you this is a good idea!

Find A Grave can be a reliable source sometimes. As to the memorial of Merida Mitchell, I question the sources provided. Have checked several sites on Ancestry.com, National Park Service, Civil War Soldiers, and Sailors, and Fold3.com - did not find Merida or his brother Byrd Mitchell listed in Civil War Records. https://wikitree.com/g2g/52842/how-reliable-is-find-a-grave-info-as-a-source  Hope this helps.

You have some excellent sources and leads. The story is amazing and tragic and unique as he lost his family in the hurricane and then runs off to war with the brother from what we read. Find a grave can be great at times and other times isn’t sourced as good as it should be
I would think there would be a civil war record for him “Buck”. How odd
Yes Andrew it is odd that there is no military record for Buck.  Good luck with your searching.  Thank you for the star.
This is becoming an interesting search. I was able to pin point Byrd's unit 28th Reg. LA Infantry (Thomas') Company I, enlisted as a private and discharged as a corporal. Taken POW at Vicksburg Jul 4, 1863. It doesn't appear that Byrd was at Sabine Pass, so I don't think they were in the same Regiment. Didn't find another Mitchell in the 28th LA either. https://www.fold3.com/image/81601460

The information on FindaGrave is vague. I wonder if Buck wasn't at the Battle of Sabine Crossroads, LA instead of Sabine Pass, TX, since Byrd was taken POW at Vicksburg. There is a two year gap in Byrd's record and it may be mixed with "Jno B Mitchell" due to an orthographic error. No mention of Byrd at Sabine Pass.

Still putting it together.

Wow over 330 views I didn’t expect that much interest. Awesome. It’s definitely a mystery and every piece you have given has helped. Thank you

There is now a profile for Ira Bird Mitchell to add info to https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Mitchell-22218&public=1

I'll add anything else I find such as census records. He needs to be categorized under Civil War and Siege of Vicksburg as well. I have the handwritten Civil War Prisoner of War Records, 1861-1865. I'm going through the Louisiana and Texas Confederate Troops trying to find Buck. I have found a promising lead and that is a "MJ Mitchell" 1st LA Calvary. Trying to explore that soldier. Fold3 is far from inclusive but it's a place to look. Sometimes you have to break down and search page by page in handwritten records that haven't been listed online. I've looked in Newspapers.com and had no luck so far.
How wonderful!!! Thank you. I’m fairly new to wikitree so please anything you can do to improve his profile it would be so much appreciated. What a story these brothers have
Still going through the POWs of Vicksburg. There were a whole lot of men who refused to sign the parole. Interesting.
I've set up a research project tree on Ancestry to keep track of my findings and have it all available to put on your profiles. Are they related to you or are you a LA Civil War researcher? I noticed other requests. These will be great for the upcoming Source-a-thon. I'm in the Southern Sourcerers group and we're looking for a few new members. It's a good learning experience since you're new to Wiki. I'll help mentor you over the rough spots. Wiki is tricky at first. LOL

V.

yes they are all related to me. The confederate veterans are related to my wife. So far she is related to Daniel Carman (Union) and Merida “Buck” Mitchell (CSA) and I’m related to 4 grandpa’s Joseph Simpier George Trombly John Gibbs and Abram Wiltse also my great great grandma first husband Samuel Grant. This is not even to mention John Gibbs brothers who were in civil war also. James Walter Gibbs and George Washington Gibbs. I appreciate all the help being new to wikitree

Going back over some of my side projects and found Buck. I see that your wife is related to a Carman. I have Carmans going back to the Winthrop Fleet. Sometimes I let a search simmer on Ancestry as records are constantly being added. I have quite a few to verify whether or not they are the person we are looking for.

You have quite a Civil War genealogy. That whole area was TransMississippi Territory and there are numerous ways to research. If one doesn't pan out, I just go to another.
