Where to Find records earlier than County has on file

Thomas Cavender / Thompson Cavender are they the same person? I believe they are the same person. However Owen Co Indiana doesn't have birth records before 1880. Suggestions on locating records not within the County would be much appreciated. I have Census records 1870 and 1880 under Thompson. I have a marriage license in 1887 and census from 1900 and 1910 under Thomas. His death records and headstone are Thomas. He is my Great Grandfather. Maybe if his father had a will? Looking for direction here :) Thanks !!

You could look at the surrounding counties close to Owen, such as Clay, Greene, Putnam, Monroe and Morgan. All of them have county courthouses.  Owen may have been a part of one of these counties before they split.  Check the county histories also.

Owen Co was settled in 1819. Persons who lived there in Dec 1825 were considered pioneers according to their website. When I went a few weeks ago the Courthouse had the marraige and probate records in the hall! I was shocked that anyone could have access. But birth records are at the Health Dept. I guess I will try verifying from the death records and hope his father William P Cavender had a will.
