Sep/Oct Biography Builders - Surnames beginning with the Letter "B"

1.1k views

This month's theme will be surnames beginning with the letter "B".

Biography Builders Goal: To make profiles as complete as possible with well-written biographies and sources. You should research as much as you can find on a person, writing the information onto the profiles to create as complete a life story as you can for that person. Sourcing should be full citations. This includes adding categories and links to events and people connected to that profile and citing all those additions. See the first month for examples of how to participate.

Here's our checklist:

Data Section:

  • birth date/place
  • names of parents
  • marriage date/place and spouse name
  • death date/place

Biography Section:

  • Written (full) sentences stating the facts above, adding inline sources to each fact.
  • Is the profile '''Genealogically Defined?'''
  • As a general rule biographies should be in your own words. Paraphrase and rewrite, don't copy/paste.
  • Baptism, burial, military, and other life events with inline sources.
  • Something to "humanize" the person, such as career or avocation with sources.
  • List of children with at least one pertinent fact.
  • One of the suggestions was siblings. I think this takes up real estate.
  • Explanatory remarks, if needed (e.g. disputed persons information, Research Notes, whatever needs extra explaining).
  • Photos or pictures, background. Not a must, but nice (you need to own the copyright unless they are in the public domain).
  • Categories/Projects.
  • Connection to the Global Tree.
  • All duplicates merged or initiated.
  • Links to persons and events, perhaps from Wikipedia.
  • Historical context as related to the person's life.
  • Sources, Sources, Sources.

You can see some ideas on where to find some of this information on the Biography Builders space page, linked below.

Use "comments" below to ask questions.

NOTE: Biography Builders will not show on the tracker. Please add a list to your answer.

WikiTree profile: Space:Biography_Builders

in Requests for Project Volunteers by Bob Keniston G2G6 Pilot (263k points)
Bob, if we can show connection between the parents and the children, but are missing a date of death, is it still genealogically defined? I have a couple of profiles that I have that situation...I can show everything but a date or location of death (in one case it's both)
Just wanted to bring this up in case you didn't know.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Needs_Biography lists profiles ASKING for biographies.

I see reference to a spreadsheet. That category is basically anyone requesting a bio built which means it "should" have sources for it already. Als, let me know if It needs to be split by country and potentially state since it has topped 2000 people.

(btw, remove the category once you do it please)
Steven,

Thanks. Didn’t know that cat existed. Add the error report, and we have some sources for “un-bio’d” profiles. And a possible theme for a future challenge.

Bob
I was under the understanding that the Needs Biography was to flag Profiles without a biography, not a request for a biography that already has sources. I've seen this since I started on WikiTree two years ago on profiles that didn't have actual sources (usually the source is something to the effect of "personal knowledge of person who created the profile"). I've worked on a few of those that had absolutely NO sources at all, and if the person was alive in the 1600 and 1700s I'm a monkey's uncle.
T,

You’re right. The cat is only an ID of profiles that need id’s. Using it to bio profiles that fit a particular theme is fine. In fact, at a future date, we’ll have a challenge that is for profiles in the category.

Bob
Well, if it doesn't have sources it is supposed to be in "Unsourced". So I'm guessing it is supposed to be for profiles WITH sources but no bio.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bookstaver-2  should be the norm.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Adair-512 is I dunno what!!!

The rare few with no sources or only listing where sources were found instead of actually putting them in should have been unsourced.
Bob, did you see my first question in these comments?
T,

My bad. Sorry I didn’t get back to you. A date of death, even an estimated one is need to be defined.

Bob

Thank you Bob smiley

Steven - Thanks for pointing out this category. This would be a perfect challenge for Bio Builders! I've run across many profiles that could be added to that category, and from now on I'll try to remember to do just that as I find them.
I would think any profile with say at least 4 good sources and a bio that only lists birth, death, and parents would be perfect for this category. Now that I've split up states and provinces for US/Canada, we really need these 2,000 cleaned up. Just don't forget to remove the category once you do them. ;)

Food for thought. A. Aleš could probably make a tracker for you

B. Data doctors could start adding the category while we do our doctoring if you would use it. We see tons of profiles and often add the unsourced to them.
So I can still do the "B" names in October? I mean it says Sep/Oct.
Natalie, the BioBuilders challenges run from the 15th to the 15th, not a calendar month. So the "B" names challenge is finished now. Sorry you missed it, but there are always others!
Thanks, I did one anyway because I'm working from the list of dead/missing from the USS Indianapolis and I don't feel any enthusiasm about writing about a Pope.

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:USS_Indianapolis_(CA-35)_in_World_War_II
Natalie,

For someone on the “Old Swayback”, anytime.

Bob
Bob, no it's ok. I know the dates for the challenges now and it's not fair to others.

But thank you! I'm still going to plug along adding profiles for these men.

I have lots of surnames beginning with B but will start with https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Buckle-55 and work my way up the tree.

I have lots of images I want to add so this one may take a while.

That's good timing as I just landed on a family with the name Butt lol.

Starting with family names and profiles from sourcing:

1) Thomas Reuben Whitfield Burn

2) Sarah Bachell added hospital records

3) Richard Batchell

4) Thomas Batchell

5) Phinias/Vincent Bachel

6) Thomas Batchell

I'm in (I hope) good time for me to work on the Burrows smiley

Change of plan, working on a bunch of Billings I adopted in the last month.

1) William Billings III-Added more references, put the little bit of bio that was there into my style, added the children, military info, prof and Will information with inline citations-Genealogically defined

2) Hannah (William) Billings-Serious research involved in this one (conflated profile). Don't even know if this one should count. Added references and LOTS of research notes.

3) Hannah (Billings) Clark-part of the serious research mentioned above (had to do 4 other profiles first to get this one done correctly, attached to the correct husband, corrected marriage date, corrected date of birth, corrected date of death, added correct children and copy of first four pages of husbands will.

4) Joseph Billings Sr-what a mess frown, LOTS of notes, inline citations added, image added, will recipients added. Can't create profile for 2nd wife because of conflicting information (noted in Joseph's profile, and left note about what is wrong with the first attached wife profile on that profile.

5) Joseph Billings Jr-Full biography with notes about discrepancies with inline citations, images and partial docs attached, genealogically defined.

6) Elder Silas Burrows-Complete except for profession in biography (enough there to say it's done, I just want to do more with it.) Added both marriages including dates, locations, added his birth, children and death info with inline citations, if I remember right this was also a GEDcom clean up. This one will be my last one for this month.

I would like to participate this month.  Does this project need help with things like updating the spreadsheet?  I would be happy to do that if needed.

  8. Marie Devirginie Bergeron - 3GGM, spent a lot of time looking for additional information, did finally find her death record.

I just noticed on the spreadsheet, my total for Jul/Aug [people born in July] is now blank, when it should show 7. Could someone fix that?
Joyce,

I’m still working on the the Jul/Aug totals.

Bob
OK cool, thanks Bob!
What is this "spreadsheet" you speak of? Where does one find this? (First I've heard of it)
There is a spreadsheet for the host, me, to track individuals totals, and stickers.

FAMILY BIOGRAPHIES COMPLETED. That was fun.  I'd like to help write more.  Confused where to find other "B's" surnames that need biographies.  I'm here if anyone needs &/or wants help with their "B's" surnames.  I'll check back.  Hopefully, I can find my way back here.  So many tags, etc. I hope whoever is reading this, can please let admins know it's not simple enough.  It's fine.  Just not getting any younger and likes it simple.  Have a beautiful day everyone.

Sincerely,
