can you explain more what you mean?
My Grandfather was born a Chipman but went by Wright. On an S.S.I application it was written that he was adopted by a maternal parent but I am unable to locate this person. I can not find a connection to the Wrights and am stumped.
Do you know anything about the people who raised him?
I do not know anything about the people who raised him. He Passed away before I started doing my Family tree and my Father didn't think of asking about his grandparents.

Maternal would be the mother's family?  I don't see much on her family, I would search for Funkey family in the area with an emphasis on Grandma's maiden name being Wright.

You didn't mention any dates, but assuming your grandfather was born before 1940 a good starting point for your research would be to check census reports to find out who he was living with.
