One Name Studies Project: request your Name Study here!

Would you like to start a Name Study for a surname?  Sign up below (answer, don't comment) and Ros will create the page for you and add you as the manager.  If you do not already have it, you will be awarded the One Name Studies Project Member badge.

The three requirements are:
1) You have been on WikiTree for 30 days
2) You have signed the Honor Code
3) You have made 100 or more contributions

Read more about the project here:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:One_Name_Studies

Please note when requesting redirects to variants: There can only be three spellings of the surname per Study, and one of them must be the name itself (such as Haywood, Heywood, and Haywud for the Haywood Name Study).  This limit is posed due to limitations of the creation form plus lack of manpower.

Remember to hit 'ANSWER', not 'comment', nor 'reply'

Started one. Ros set it up. Have not received any badge yet. Is there something I was suppose to do?

No, there's nothing.  Please be patient while the badge arrives.  You can do things without it, you know! smiley

I would like to have a name study page for Hardin/Harding and Lang
answered by Kathy Edmond G2G2 (2.1k points)
selected by Dona Wilson

That will be two Studies, then... smiley as these are One Name Studies.

I have created the Harding Name Study, plus companion category page at:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Harding_Name_Study

and the Lang Name Study, plus companion category page at:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Lang_Name_Study

I am still listed as the profile manager; I do not have your email address to put you on the Trusted List.  So that you avoid spam, do not put it on this forum.  Instead, send me a Trusted List request from one of your Studies; then I will have your address and can complete the creation.

Note: Kathy needs the ONS badge plus redirects to Harding, Hardin, and Lang

Thanks for the TL request.  I have set you as manager of both Studies. smiley

I’m pretty new but I’d like to add Walker S.C./Ga/Fla as they relate to my family line. The Brick Wall is Isham Walker-6742

Now can some direct me to an ONS tutorial :)

Hello Sheryl

Redirects all set; badge on its way! smiley

Thank you Ros.  Looking forward to it.smiley

Hello,

I would like to start a One Name Project on the name Tether, including the variants Teather and Tetther.  Thanks.

Hello Ian

Could you log in, please, as your request on the closed thread was a comment, not an answer, and was from an IP address.  Sorry, I can't create a Study from an IP address.

Hello Angela

I moved your comment to an answer.  You can read more about the One Name Studies Project here:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:One_Name_Studies

which also has ideas on what to do with an ONS once you've got it! smiley

If you'd like to go back up to the original question here, you will see the requirements - one of which is having been on WikiTree for at least 30 days...

Oops! I really thought I had been on WikiTree longer than that. jI'll make another request in a week or so,

Thanks!

Is my request for my ancestor eligible now? wink

Why is my post showing as anonymous? I double checked and it says I'm logged in angry

When you posted, it was from an IP address.  Maybe you posted from your phone?

A One Name Study is not for a particular ancestor.  It's studying one surname.  Did you get a chance to look at the One Name Studies Project page that I linked in my answer?

Ah gotcha. I did read it but too much info to grasp I guess.

So, can you add Walker as my request?

I research surname Munitz, Munits, Munic, מוניץ, Муниц

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Munitz_surname_research_To-Do_List

I'd like to join the One Name Studies project. Do I need a separate page created or can the above one be extended/converted to follow required format for the Project?
answered by Patrick Munits G2G6 (8.3k points)
Your space page above can be converted, but it will no longer be a To Do List, it will be the Munitz Name Study.

I have requested Trusted List access so that I can complete the conversion, recategorisation etc.
Thank you! Conversion will work. There's no need for nearly identical content in multiple places.

I have created the Munitz Name Study, with companion category page, at:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Munitz_Name_Study

Hi. I have been here for a month now. I am afraid I jumped the gun again and converted my project to a study and now I see Ros was supposed to do that. Would you give me some guidance and let me know what needs to be done from here. I haven’t finished following the guideline for writing the profile so it is incomplete as of now. It is for Helderman Halderman Halterman Hilderman Halteman plus the two n versions of the names. My project is pertaining to Swiss Mennonites and Quakers that immigrated due to religious persecution. I don’t know how many of them are still plain people, but I would like to try to sort out the family lines by dna.
answered by Anonymous Crewe G2G2 (2.4k points)

I have finally found your freespace page and can begin to see where you need to go next.  Your best bet is the One Name Studies Project page, here:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:One_Name_Studies

which may give you lots of ideas of what you need to do (change those categories, for instance!) smiley I would have made these changes myself, only you have it set at green-lock privacy...

Hi, I think Green lock was the default. I will change it. I am going to go look at some of the example pages and get a better idea of how to organize it. Please do what you would normally do and thank you again for your help.

I would love to create a, "One Name Studies Project" for the surname, "Rabago." On Family Tree DNA, I am the voluntary admin for a surname project of the same name. Thank you. :)
answered by Daniel Cason G2G Crew (540 points)

Hi Daniel

Did you see the three requirements in the original post?  One of them was that you had to be on WikiTree for a minimum of 30 days (so you get familiar with WikiTree), so you are not eligible yet, I'm afraid.

Please come back on 23 October - look forward to seeing you then! smiley

I would like to start a One Name Study for KEIL.

Since it is a somewhat common surname at least in Europe, I'd like to initially not include any variant spellings to try to focus on the surname that is my own. If this is not advised and I'd be better off ultimately including variants such as Kiel, Kuhl, etc., please let me know

Also, if variants cannot be added later, please let me know that as well as then I would like to provide a more comprehensive list of variants to include in the original study.

Thanks for considering this study! smiley

answered by Susan Keil G2G6 Mach 1 (11.9k points)

I have created the Keil Name Study, with companion category page, at:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Keil_Name_Study

You will see from the page that you can only have three surnames/variants attached to the form (one of which needs to be the surname in the name of the Study).  These can be requested at any time.

I am still listed as the profile manager; I do not have your email address to put you on the Trusted List.  So that you avoid spam, do not put it on this forum.  Instead, send me a Trusted List request from your Study; then I will have your address and can complete the creation.

I would like to start a One Name Study for the German surname Kühner (sometimes spelled Kuhner - without the umlaut) and its anglicized variants Keener (which already has a On Name Study), Kenner, and Kiener (possibly adding others in the future). Note that Keener (and possibly other variants) is also a fairly common English or Irish surname, but I'd prefer to limit this study to the German variants if possible.
answered by William Keener G2G Crew (590 points)
As you noted, there is already a Keener Name Study (so you cannot really have Keener as a variant).  Did you also notice that the Keener Name Study already has Kuhner as one of its variants?

Please contact the PM of the Keener Name Study to work out whether you need a separate study or simply a freespace page which links into his Study.
I didn't notice that, thanks. Will follow up with the PM of the Keener name Study.

I have started [https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Garand_Name_Study] , please join me!

It should already be in the index, but I don't have a badge. I adopted two projects previously, so I think I did the categories right.
answered by Hannah Berney G2G2 (2.1k points)

The categories look right (I presume you didn't want the DNA category), but please please please follow the instructions given on the ONS Project page, as there are 'behind the scenes' things to do as well. smiley

It would also be helpful if you told me which Studies you have adopted so I check more 'behind the scenes' stuff.  Thanks.

Note: Hannah needs the ONS badge plus redirect to Garand

I also had the Grant Name Study but it looks like it was passed off to someone else.
Um...I checked the changelog for the Grant Name Study and it doesn't look like you ever 'had' it.  It was created by Geoff Grant (the current PM) in 2014, and he is still active.  You were never the PM, and are not even on the Trusted List.  You changed the start date and location yesterday.  I am confused.
I changed the surname tags. Mr. Geoff had the template ones still listed. (Smith, smyth, smythe). It wasn't the space page, the actual catergory had been emptied, save for his header. The other project I manage isnt a ons.
Smith, Smyth, and Smythe are not tags from a template.  They were put in there specifically by somebody else earlier this year. I am still confused.  The category page was last changed in February 2018, and not by you.  Which page are you talking about? Can you give me a link to this category page which had been emptied?  The one I am looking at is well full.
Yes, the connected category is filled with some of my branch from the trunk line descendant, now. I just touched base with Geoff and he has added me officially as a project manager. It seems he simply did not have the time to do as much as he had hoped.

The only new thing I noticed is that someone added a regional subproject for Grant's in Hampshire, England. Perhaps that was part of the category change?

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Grant_Name_Study
The regional subcategory (not subproject) was there from the beginning in 2014. It is good to have these geographical subcategories, as the Study will be worldwide.

Thanks for letting me know of the change of PM.

Ros, I added names to the category, but I await the page and badge for the Dean One Name Study. Thank you very much!
answered by Connie Graham G2G5 (5.1k points)

I have created the Dean Name Study at:
https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Dean_Name_Study

Its companion category page can be reached by clicking on the link 'Dean Name Study' under the sentence 'This page has been accessed...' under the coloured box.

I am still listed as the profile manager; I do not have your email address to put you on the Trusted List.  So that you avoid spam, do not put it on this forum.  Instead, send me a Trusted List request from your Study; then I will have your address and can complete the creation.

Note: Connie needs the ONS Badge plus redirect to Dean

It's been three weeks since I created the Dean Name Study and asked you to send me a Trusted List request so I could set you up as manager.

Could you do this for me, please?
