I have one great-grandparent from Aveiro, and another from Viseu. I'm also 25% Colonial Brazilian, which grants me some more Portuguese ancestry, largely from the Azores and from Minho.

Hi, I've just started doing genealogy so I'm still learning the ropes, but I'd love to be a part of the Portugal Project. I have grandparents that come from the Highwater Parish of Vila Franca Do Campo, Azores as well as at least one other island in the Azores. I also have family that came from Cape Verde Islands (Pina) that intermarried with the Fontes family. I'm hoping to expand on the Fontes line. I'm looking at joining the Azores part of this project and will do anything I can to help it along. Thank you for considering me.

Hi, Team :)

My ancestors were conquistadors and nobreza living in the Canary Islands in 1550

But they hail from Braga and Baixo Alentejo in Portugal 1490 to 1530

I have no idea though how to search for births and marriages in Portugal

?Can someone help please?

Olá Mindy, I've been researching my family history and would love some help/resources. I'm a first generation Portuguese American, my family is from Braga. Excited to join the Portuguese Project. I'm fluent in Portuguese so if anyone needs any translations I can help (as long as the handwriting isn't a bagunça smiley )

Olá Pedro! I'm glad you found us here on WikiTree. In order to work with a project you will need to upgrade (it's free) to the Family Member level. You can do this at any time by adding your genealogy communication preferences.

 Help:Membership explains our membership.

Let me know if you have any questions! Once you are a Member I can send you more information about our project.

I don't have the knowledge or extra time to join the Portuguese project, but I could use some help. My husband had a Portuguese grandmother, and I am trying to work on her line, with no experience as yet. Her parent immigrated from the Azores; they married in this country in the early 1900's, and I'm trying to find their parents in the Azores, but have no information but their names and islands.

Alison, can you email me a link to her profile if it is on WikiTree? I can post and ask for help in the group. I also do personal research to get people started.

Found this website in an attempt to find a free and open-sourced alternative to other genealogy websites.

I'm a 26 year-old masters student in Paleobiology, currently about to go live in Lille, France to further my studies.

I am Portuguese with my father's side coming from Vila Real and with my mother's side from Algarve. In the short-term I'm planing to contribute info up to my great-grandparents, though a long-term objective is to got beyond that (I will need to start researching on paleography smiley).

I would like to join your project too.

Great to see more biologists join! Bem-vindo!
Thank you Michel!

By the way, does anyone know the proper way to document Portuguese surnames on the website? Portuguese (and Spanish) naming conventions don't have a family name, in contrast to the rest of Europe, and instead each person takes a surname from their father and mother for their last names. In Portuguese people the majority of names follow "mother's last surname" + "father's last surname", though the reverse is also permitted. This usually means the father's last surname is the one that gets passed across multiple generations. In any case, I've been placing in "Current Last Name" the last surname and in "Other Last Name(s)" the first surname, is that the correct procedure?
There is a nice conversation here

and I guess you should checkout

Every country has their own differences from the US naming (which is kindof hard programmed into Wikitree), so it is best to check the conventions.

PS: I am not a member of the Portugal project, so I hope a leader will step in still.

Welcome to WikiTree, Marcos! I'll send you some information to get you started in the project. We are always happy to add new researchers to our group. laugh

For the naming conventions, you can look at this page. They don't really fit into WikiTree fields like they should, but it will show you how to add them so you don't create errors.

One more porkchop just showed up to this matança, hahaha! My father was born on Santa Maria and emigrated to the U.S. when he was 14; I spent a lot of time with his parents when I was growing up and as the oldest grandchild was the only one to pick up a bit of the language from them.

As the years toil on I miss them even more, and wish I had someone around to exercise the vocabulary with. I keep wanting to invest more energy into WikiTree and having recently pared down my activity with a few other projects that were becoming less rewarding, this seemed like a good time to pop my head in here. If you could use an extra set of hands/eyes/fingers that know how to code, I'd enjoy the chance to participate.

Hello Peter,

We would love to have you in the project! If you could respond to this from your email so that it goes to me, I can add you to your pages. My paternal great-grandmother was born in Hawai'i but her ancestors are from São Miguel. I look forward to working with you!

I just saw your page request, so I have your email after all laugh
