Best way to start a Western Australia Project

Hi all,

I am interested in started a Western Australia Project. I have a load of ideas for projects concerning West Aus and think the best way to start is to have an overarching project for the state.

Some of my current ideas are:

  • Historical buildings and sites
  • WA welcome walls
  • Pensioner Guards and prison warders
  • Convicts to WA
  • WA cemeteries
  • WA Premiers
  • Wa Remarkable Women (183 women of WA on the WA state library website)

...just to name a few.

Obviously, my ideas are ambitious, but I think maybe with a WA project that it could inspire more interest in wikitree members and perhaps even draw more people to the site.

Can anyone give me some advice surrounding this idea and what I should do please.

Thanks Kylie (Haese-11)

Great idea. Always good to hear from a member who's motivated to initiate something themselves. The Leaders of the Australia Project are Irene Dillon, Veronica Williams and Paul Bech  and the link to the Australia Project Page is https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Australia

I’ve been working on the Moora Cemetery under the Cemeteries Project, creating profiles for those who don’t have one, adding the burial details to those who do, adding the cemetery category on everyone and creating sub categories for the ONS for related families in that cemetery see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Bindi_Bindi%2C_Western_Australia%2C_Crane_Name_Study which points up to the parent ONS.

A good starting point would be to touch base with those who manage the current Australia project and its sub-projects to discuss how you can collaborate with them and assess how your ideas would fit into the structure that they are establishing.

Can't help with advice, just posting to say great idea.

I've always been tempted to enter everybody on the surviving parts of the 1859 Census or one of the boats from 1829 but have so far resisted.

I know the feeling, Mark. “Do I really want to take on another project?!?”

I used to be responsible for all the Soldier Settlement Registers in a previous work life.  They are now with the Battye Library but not indexed.  This would be a good sub project for WA.
