I have a relative that appears in one census then disappears until 1940 census

my great grandfather appears in 1910 census but disappears until 1940 census.  I am trying to track his progress across the country.  I know that he worked on a WPA project during the Great Depression.  Any help would be great.

Consider these as possibilities...... He would have needed to remarry...  (The WWI and WWII draft DOB are the same,  so perhaps he changed his middle name to Joe??)

Thank you for helping shed some light of things.  I had already looked at those items, I would sooner say that someone made an assumption of he middle name.  I will write these down and keeping searching.
I just noticed you imply you have the 1940 Census...... so perhaps the 1930 and 1940 Census here aren't him..... if you post  your 1940 Census  I'll look some more for 1930.
Yes he did.  I am trying to also find the location of the second marriage.  Nothing turned up in Washington state, nor Idaho that I have found.

The census said that he lived in the same location at the last.  I looked at the 1940 census (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K932-HTF
