There isn't a birth for him in the Tas Pioneer Index (1803-1899). There is a marriage:

Digger - Tasmanian Pioneer Index 1803-1899

Surname: BURGES
Given Names: THOMAS MULLIGAN
Event: Marriage
Father/Spouse Surname: MORRIS
Mother/Spouse Given Names: ANNIE
Day: 26
Month: 9
Year: 1883
Age: 28
Sex: M
Spouse Age: 21
Spouse Sex: F
Registration Place: PORT SORELL
Registration Number: 980/1883
Reference: RGD 37

The death index on Ancestry or FindMyPast may have his parents. There's nothing here to indicate he was born in Tas. There may be something more on the death certificate.

Have you gone through TROVE looking for him? An obit isoften helpful.

Awesome thanks im new to this. I will try for a death cert next week and no I havent heard or come across the sites you have mentioned thank you

Sorry, I should have been more specific on web sites.

Ancestry is http://www.ancestry.com.au a subscription site and you may have free access at your local library and/or Family History Centre (local Mormon Church).

FindMyPast is http://www.findmypast.com.au, another subscription site and once again your local library or Family History Centre may have free access.

TROVE - the National Lirary of Ausralia's wonderful website of old newspapers - searchable with images - http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper.

The LDS site has a lot of helpful tutorials on family history at http://www.familysearch.org. They have some Australian records in their collections but many more US and Europe.

For a bunch of useful links try Cyndi's List at http://www.cyndislist.com/australia.

A word of caution: there are a lot of family trees out there with dubious if not outright wrong data. Take these with a grain of salt and use them as hints of where to look for your folks.

Before going any further, has anyone else worked with Thomas Burgess? No other trees out there? Google him with variations of his name. Who knows what you'll find.

Good luck.

Hi there I have for about the last year googled thomas and different spelling I have found a thomas edward burgess with same year no family and possibly same year of death.. as my gg grandfather doesnt appear to have his death recorded. He is in my gg grandmother's family tree but there it stops short. I did find him in one other tree but the lady had made a mistake and removed his name. Mulligan seems to run though the family tree as a middle name in the mens names. My g grandmother apparently said we the burgess where mulligans? Ill crack it some how thanks for you help :)

There is a digital copy of the WWI service records of Thomas Burgess, farmer, from Harford, Tas, age 26years and 6 months on the 6th October 1916. His next of kin is his mother Annie Burgess of Harford, Tas. The age is right for this to be one of Thomas and Annie's children.

http://www.naa.gov.au and put Thomas Burgess in the search box at upper right. http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/DetailsReports/ItemDetail.aspx?Barcode=3168263

He was awarded the Military Medal for Conspicuous Bravery twice. The citations are in the document. Generally you see a father mentioned as next of kin but in this case it is his mother.

This isn't anything about his grandparents but it is still interesting.

Wow that is totally awesome the paternal side of my family has allways been a mystery to me. My g grandfather john m burgess came to nz in 1913 I did find a copy of her will and she left eeverything to her children but my ggrandfather was cut out of her will. I will get a copy of that death cert for thomas edward burgess. I think he past away 1896 after the birth of a still born baby. My gg grandfather certintly hard to trace. Im looking forward to sharing this with my dad. I cant wait to get my hands on that cert! Hopefuly not a other brick wall you are a gem thank you so much. I would never have thought to look where you have I so appreciate your help ;)
