I made a limited (more later) update to Stephen R.'s record, inserting a historical note about "Ransell", his nickname, and adding son Standish who also fought the civil war. I added the following information to the new record for Standish:

Distinguished Service:    DISTINGUISHED SERVICE 
Side Served:    Union 
State Served:    New York 
Unit Numbers:    1606 1606 
Service Record:    Enlisted as a Private on 09 March 1864 at the age of 18
Enlisted in Company D, 98th Infantry Regiment New York on 31 March 1864.
Received a disability discharge Company D, 98th Infantry Regiment New York on 20 December 1864 in Albany, NY
