not sure what "in a merge, this will be the final ID" means?

I am trying to merge and just want to be sure it is right to think that "in a merge, this will be the final ID" means that ID1 will be deleted and merged into ID2? ID2 will then be the ONLY one.

Thanks so much for asking this question.  The window that shows that information you posted above also is accurate.

BUT it would be much better for the WikiTree system to always merge the higher number (in this case ID-2) into the lower number (in this case ID-1) and make any information/data adjustments necessary after the merge.  The option for doing so is on that same page from which you received the info.

Please keep in mind that, unless you are the Profile Manager on BOTH profiles (in your example ID-1 AND ID-2) the merge will be a "Proposed Merge" until such time as the other Managers(s) agree to it, or other action is taken.

Hope this helps.

Good answer, Keith!

As for controlling the merge direction, the system does already do that. If you try to merge two profiles, and they have the same last name, you will not be able to merge the lower ID into the higher ID. This is a fairly recent change. :)

Of course, you can merge in either direction if the last names are different. In that case you have to choose which name is correct, and merge into that one.
