Julian and Gregorian Calendars

What is the protocol? In America we adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752.

I work with lots of old records that record the date as 12 day 1st month 1676 and I know that that equals 22 March 1677 in the Gregorian calendar. I'mjust wondering if conversions should be made? A better solution is just to indicate OS or NS for old style dating vs new style dating.

Any thoughts?

It all depends on the country observing the calendars as not all countries changed from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian in the same year.  In England, in the Julian Calendar the first day of the year was Lady Day (March 25th), but I don't know whether or not it was the same for all countries.  Under the OS calendar for England, March 25, 1676 was the first day of 1676 and March 24, 1676 was the last day.  3/24/1676 O.S. in England might be 3/24/1677 N.S. in another country.  A you indicated above, sometimes the first day of the year in the Julian Calendar was the first day of Spring.

Not all countries switched to the Gregorian Calendar at the same time. I believe that the British Empire did not use it until 1750.If I come across something with conflicting dates I make a note in my private notes.
