CHANGE TO BEST ANSWER PROCESS:  After much discussion we have come to the conclusion that all answers in the Weekend Chat are of equal importance and weight.  So we are going to discontinue the Best Answer portion as it adds points and then takes them away from posters and is causing some hurt feelings.  So in the interest of everyone is equal and valued we will delete any best answers given which will deduct those points because it has been pointed out that to give everyone best answer is also not a viable option.

Weekend Chat is for everyone. It's a place to catch up on what people are up to and to share what you've been doing.  New members can say hello, introduce themselves, ask questions, and meet each other.  Our seasoned members can share progress or successes from their projects, give tips and advice, or chime in on hot topics.

Post as many answers and comments as you wish. It doesn't hurt anyone to post a lot, and enjoy the multitude of topics.

Peggy prayers for a speedy recovery and successful surgery.   Definitely get into physical therapy as soon as you can.  From personal experience with my wrist it really helps with healing.  Hope to hear from you next weekend if you can't know we are thinking about you.
I am so sorry Laura for your illness I send lots of thoughts to you and hope you will be ok.

It is always very horrible to not being well
Thanks Susan it is annoying but not life threatening
Laura, just wait until you get older than dirt like me. I gave up on just taking a Tylenol, now it's a handful at a time. :)  Seriously, take care of yourself!
I am taking ibuprofen, rhus tox, arnica montana and using blue emu.  As long as i sit quiet it is ok.  I am better than I was.  It is just slower than I want.
Remember to check out posts on both page 1 and 2.
Hi I am new here. Been slogging away trying to find and fix all the family. Now I realise the journey is just as important. Taking more time to investigate sideways lines of family.

Doing this has led to debunking several family stories. Interesting, but the real story is far less interesting!
Glad you joined us Marion

Because the system retains the history of what you enter you don't need to worry about if you did something that might need some tweaks
Had a good laugh just now. One relative was born in Hedsor,Buckinghamshire, England. However the transcription had him from Bed Sores, Buckinghamshire.
Hope you enjoyed the Weekend Chat and will join us again next weekend.

Have a safe week!

Tips:

A new way to print your tree.  The fan!  Currently it will only fill in the first 6 generations.  WikiTree is working on expanding that but for now you will need to hand add the 7th level.  Go to:

http://treeseek-php.herokuapp.com/wikitree.php?pid=Walter-3015   Replace Walter-3015 in the URL with your WikiID or that of a profile you want to print.  Hit enter.  Your chart should appear.  Right click and select print.

You may see an increase in your Suggestions as Ales has added several new suggestions.  Most deal with names or locations.  For a complete list of the suggestions Data Doctors look for go to:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Data_Doctors   scroll down to see the various suggestions and their descriptions.

If you enjoyed the Source A Thon there is a Monthly Sourcerers’ Challenge and Saturday Sourcing Sprints.  You can find the URLs to join in G2G.  Here is the one for Oct 2018:  https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/694002/sourcerers-challenge-month-of-october-2018?show=694002#q694002

That's cool. I think Familysearch has the same gimmick.

http://treeseek-php.herokuapp.com/wikitree.php?pid=Ferraiolo-2

Fan is looking good. Needs more meat on my dad's side though.
I love this!  It doesn't appear to work with profiles that are private, but that's understandable.
I love the fan! It really highlights any brickwalls.  It also doesn't show the pedigree collapse, but I'm not sure how a computer can illustrate the family vine on my grandmother's side.  Macrame still seems to be the best bet.
Laurie if you look at the example I used from I tree you will see that there is enogamy in the blue and green with Adam Walter and his wife Barbe Betz in both 6th levels.

I'm not sure how to really illustrate collapse in this type of  chart. Perhaps if it chose one of the colors and made all instance that color. That would make my Dad's side a lot of the same colorsmiley

You could put a symbol on the duplicate people.
The fan chart is so cool.  My husband has a plotter so I get to see it in large.  BTW-thanks for hosting the chat Laura
If you go to your Trees and Tools under MyWikiTree and select the 1st report it displays by generation so you can see generation 7 and fill it in by hand.
That is pretty cool - thanks! My mom is still living, so it  only shows my father's side, but still looks great!

Well My team came in 3rd place in last weekends source-a-thon so I am a very proud team captain!!  Go Kiwi Crew!!

I even won a prize and chose the My Heritage Complete Plan subscripton for 1 year. That has now been activated and I am having so much fun investigating My Heritage records and trees!!

Also with regard to my mothers new found biological family, the meeting between second cousins has been set for 14 October - so just over 1 week from today.

Otherwise I dont think I have anything else to report!!

Hails and horns!

What is up? Not much going on here. Editing a video for this weekend or thereabouts. Been kind of slow doing video and comic stuff as I've had a few appointments here and there. Nothing too serious. Just got new glasses and my hearing aids tweaked. Had a hearing test and everything's checking out fine.

Been hanging around on the #genchat hashtag on twitter. They asked if anyone was descended from a Mason recently. I wasn't sure so I did some digging on Ancestry and found a Mason card for a 3X great-grandparent. I'm not 100% sure it's him as Stevens is a common last name. That and I think the birthplace was a little off. Dover and Maine are close, though.

I also came across a DNA match willing to help me deal with some brick walls. I hope he can help me out. That way I can fill out that fan Laura talked about in the helpful tips area. =)

Last week I popped by the YouTube livestreams for the Wikitree source a thon. People seemed to have fun trying to pronounce my last name. I should make a thread about it on g2g. Or just link people to a vid:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzXFq_m9hQ0

There really is a video for everything. For some good and others...not so much.

Hope everyone's doing well. Since Halloween is coming I will provide the music. >=)

Pip, you just don't have enough French friends. I would have guessed Lo zee ay but then I grew up around a lot of French Canadians (Mom's side). My own surname is seldom pronounced the way I grew up with (mc cull um) which a lot of the census records end up recording it as.
No, no French friends.... except here on WikiTree! Rural piedmont of North Carolina: French settlers were extremely rare!
Ain't gonna find many Eye-Talians there Ah reckon. =)

I go down to the south on a semi frequent basis to visit my brother and his family. They live in Northern VA, near Charlottesville. It's tough finding a good Italian restaurant there. At least they have the stuff to make lasagna in the stores. Granted northern VA is different from your neck of the woods.

I have been to NC, though. The Outer Banks are nice. =D
Pizza is everywhere in the US I think.  And spaghetti and either meat sauce or meatballs is pretty common most places
@Chris! Durn Tootin’. But we’ve got a great Italian restaurant here in my town. Big Mike’s.

Where I grew up... way out in the country, within a seven mile radius of where my mother’s ancestors settled in the mid 1700s. It was a real treat to go to a restaurant in Charlotte. I could never live in a city, though. Too much a country boy. Italian food for us was a frozen pizza. Sorry!!!
@ Laura: Pizza is indeed everywhere! But, the pizza they make in Italy is different than the pizza in the US. Brick oven pizza is where it's at. Plus no one in Italy tosses the dough. My parents took a pizza making class at Tuscan Kitchen a while back. The pizza is so good!

Spaghetti is not Italian, sadly. Neither are meatballs. I was just as shocked as you to find out, Laura! =O

@Pip: Big Mike's? Okay. Interesting. What do they serve at Big Mike's?
Pasta was invented in China but I don't think that is where spaghetti etc is from
Toasted ravioli was invented in St Louis. Ice cream cones too
Big Mike's reminds me of Giovanni's here in town.

Pasta in Italy originated in Sicily in the 1100s. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasta

China's pasta is different from Italian pasta.

And now I am getting hungry. I ate 2 hours ago....

Halloween is coming. Know what that means:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGiYxCUAhks
by Chris Ferraiolo G2G6 Pilot (756k points)
Yeah. It's time to batten down the hatches and ignore all the music and noise for the next 3 months!!

We no longer do Halloween - for 3 reasons.

1 - my son is a teenager and does not want to do childish things any more

2 - my son is also diabetic and doesnt see why he should be out begging for candy when he cannot eat said candy at any time of the day. What candy he does eat, has to be strictly rationed.

3 - the last time my son was out trick or treating - I think he was 11 - and this was about 1 year after his diabetes diagnosis - he tripped on his costume (he was a grim reaper that year) and fell down some stairs. He hasn't been out for halloween since then.
Luckily the first one is a phase. Teenagers think stuff like that isn't cool. Wait till he gets older. Nostalgia is funny that way.

As for Diabetes. Well, there's not much you can do about that. Just keep an eye on it. =D

As for me? I love Halloween. =) My aunt made me a Spider-Man costume which was comic accurate. I sometimes still use the cloth mask in videos or of I am answering the door on Halloween.
2 of the Spider man movies were on this weekend so I recorded them
Which two? I like Tom Holland's Spidey the most. Tobey Maguire is a close second. Andrew Garfield was....eh.....
Original and 2
Awesome! The Sam Raimi movies were sweet. The first two anyway. The third fell victim to studio meddling. The director wanted Sandman. The studio wanted Venom. So they mashed both in.

Been busy here for the past couple of weeks... I decided that my short-term goal was to get profiles entered for all of my ancestors back to great great grandparents *and* all their siblings, and to flesh out profiles for everybody with whatever sources I could easily find on FamilySearch (mostly 1850-1940 census records, BMD records, etc.).  I think I have one person's siblings left to enter (big family; I've been putting it off).  Bare bones profiles are in place for everyone (at least one good source) and fuller profiles for most of them; there are some that need a little more attention.  For some I also added in spouses and kids, or at least notes about them in the person's profile so there's something there for later.

Weekend plan:  grading and housework.  Maybe including some yardwork since the weather looks like it should be good.
by Lisa Hazard G2G6 Pilot (263k points)
Great goal!
Thanks!  I figure it'll help with connecting to DNA matches later, and with breaking through some brick walls.  I have several at the great great or 3G grandparent level.  Siblings may help.

The next goal will be tougher.  For one great great grandfather, I have a pretty complete tree going back another 4-5 generations.  But I pulled almost all of it in from FamilySearch profiles via WikiTree X when I first got started, without any proper sourcing.  (I was in a hurry to connect to a known distant ancestor who was already in WikiTree, and went a little overboard.)  That'll take more work to clean up.
Great minds think alike, right? After the let down of the Source-a-Thon ending, I waited a couple of days trying to figure out what I was supposed to be doing. Oh, yes, filling out my profiles. Just  like you, Lisa.

Go for it!

NATIONAL APPLE BETTY DAY

National Apple Betty Day, an American food holiday, is observed each year on October 5.

Similar to what is known as apple crisp, crumble or cobbler, the American variant known as the Betty or Brown Betty dates from colonial times.  Apple Betty (sometimes called Apple Brown Betty) is made with crumbs, apples, cinnamon, sugar and sometimes other ingredients.

Apple Brown Betty was one of the favorite desserts of Ronald and Nancy Reagan in the White House.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Yum. Send some my way

No! No more food! I've got to lose some weight before my daughter's wedding! crying

You can make baked apples with cinnamon and ginger and no sugar and they are very good!
Laura, they are quite good that way, but then you might have to drizzle a bit of maple syrup (or honey) and a really good sized dollop of whipped cream.
oouuuuhhh - yum - I am going to make this recipe, but i am going to try pears.... at some point.  Thank you Dorothy, I love your "Today is National...." especially when it is food.
I love apple cake my favorite I wish I had one now after reading about it
Thank you Dorothy! Did you make us some? *wink  *drool

I love apple cake too. A family member, long gone now, would make it with me and we would sit at her table with forks and the pan eating and chatting. Ahhh, memories...

First this week is a Rant. Please if you feel the need to use images as sources at the very least add a citation in the sources section as well. I recently adopted about 1500 profiles and despite working on them for most of the last 2 weeks I still have about 300 suggestions on my list. The majority of those are for nearly empty profile because another member just added the images of the source documents and offered no citations. End Rant. We just had Pizza for lunch because I got an email form a local pizza place with a special deal for World Smile day. Later this evening I am going to help set up our club's table for a small festival this weekend. Tomorrow morning at 8 in the morning I am going to the festival for a pancake and sausage breakfast and then work all day . after the festival closes I can get a turkey dinner because I plan to work again on Sunday, Sunday starts at 8 in the morning with another pancake breakfast and work our table all day again. That means little or no time for anything WikiTree this weekend.
by Dale Byers G2G Astronaut (1.7m points)
Dale thank you for what you do with orphan profiles and it is great you also support your community.  We will miss you but thank you for dropping in
I had a couple of minutes to fix a few more profiles this morning. I also hope to be able to add a few pictures of the Huntsburg Pumpkin Fest tomorrow, I will  be posting them to Facebook so if any of you want to try and find my page there I can and will be checking that during the day. I could even add friends if a request is sent to that. Working on WikiTree from my phone is something I gave up on long ago and I would be too distracted to do quality work anyway so that is out but Facebook is mostly mindless so I can do that in the slow times.
Re reading my original post I forgot to mention that all of the food I mentioned is free because I will be working both days. Also if you do decide to send a friend request to me on Facebook, I am the one with the callsign K8DOB on my page.
I wondered about images being used as sources and then not sourced.  So, on my own, I had decided that if i were to use an image as a source, i should make sure where i got it.  And to help me along that train of thought Wiki does have a question before uploading; is this a photo or a source.  I think at some point as a newbie I may not have clued into that right away.
Great tip Nicole
Nicole,I have nothing against using images as sources as long as using that image does not violate terms of use agreements or copyrights. However they should not be used as stand alone sources, they should have a text citation in the sources section of the biography as well so that others can see where you found that source and possibly find it themselves.
Just adding where you got it when you upload the image does not add a citation to the profile and that is what is needed.
Laura, My "job" at the festival is to man our table/display and answer any questions. Not a big job but it frees up others to help patrol, to help patrons, and stop traffic for the parade and when people are trying to cross the road. This festival is located at the intersection of a busy State road and a US highway so traffic control is a major part of the clubs job. We had very high attendance yesterday and expect the same today because it is a free event and we are having mostly clear weather with temps in the 80's.
Sounds like fun. They are lucky to have you
About images...if you take a photo of say a tombstone give the name and location of the tombstone

If from a source like a book out of copyright give name of book and publication date

The weather is so nice we took a ride across the James River. That is Jamestown Island in the background.

I thought it was early for snow
Just beautiful, Doug!

Welcome to the weekend....

It's still hot and humid here. We will probably go directly from summer to winter.

It's hard to notice the weather when you are inside working on WikiTree. Sure hope that everyone else who participated enjoyed the Source-A-Thon. Just like last year, I can't seem to stop sourcing random profiles when the weekend finishes. I found one who had to wait until after the thon, he deserved a decent biography which took about a day to finish. Then I had to add some sources for his father, and propose a merge.

I see that someone has added profiles for my great great grandfather's siblings, with at least the birth record for each. That should really lead me down a path, since I know I can find lots of information about them and their spouses and children...That's 8 siblings...

I joined the Mayflower project on WikiTree and have been working on some (probably) ancestors, mostly in the Standish and Rood/Rude families. I did add Jehoden Standish. People tend to ignore siblings (see above wink) but Jehoden's sister's children were all named in her estate. Unfortunately the one who got the big Bible (and a striped cotton dress) will be hard to track down on the Wiki, and that Bible could be a great resource.

by Kay Knight G2G6 Pilot (593k points)
Kay, I was fortunate enough to inherit about six family Bibles over the years. A boon to me!
Pip the monthly Sourcerers Challenge is a way to source at your own pace.
Kay I thought I posted this but it does not seem to be showing....

Some nice people found sources for orphan profiles I had adopted and not gotten to yet.  I was thrilled!  Glad you got some help too!  Isn't it fun when someone finds stuff you need!

Hello, WikiChatterers,

I'm typing this on my new computer which arrived today. And of course, I'm sooooo tech savvy. surprise It's been seven years on the old laptop. Decided to get an all-in-one. Still have things to do on it. But now I can work on WikiTree with three screens open: this one, the laptop, and my iPad. Another good thing is that this computer piks upp miy speling eroors kuite nisely.

I survived my first Source-a-Thon, and really, when it was over I was kinda let down. The experience was great and I had a great team: Sandringham!! I almost didn't want to go back to my personal genealogy. (Spent an hour and a half this a.m. sourcing just one couple.) Felt like I was getting to know people in 19th century Devonshire, England.

Breakthroughs this week: Lis Shifflett helped to prove a relationship in my family, two half-siblings. The discovery of a transcription of a will helped to identify the father of both. Now to figure out the mothers! Also, David Selman helped me with some record sources for Cherokee County, Texas, where my gg-grandfather spent some time with his brothers-in-law in 1870.

Spent some time this morning looking through estate papers in Gaston County, North Carolina. If you haven't done this yet, you'll be amazed at what you'll learn about families, especially if there was no will. I always read through the sale of items to see who was buying, often family members of the deceased.

It's almost time for the annual Leaf Change here in the mountains. Means hundreds of thousands of touristas. Every year we try to tell them that the leaf change is better in New England, but so far no one is taking the bait.

All in all a good week. With colder weather coming, I'll lay down the outside projects and work more on genealogy!

You folks are the best! And I do enjoy working with you! Have a great weekend, everyone.

The Pipster

by Pip Sheppard G2G Astronaut (2.7m points)
Congrats on your brick-wall demos, Pip!  Estate papers are awesome.  And it's weird how you tend to get a lot more out of them when the person didn't leave a will.
This was my first Source-a-Thon too and I really enjoyed it and I know exactly what you mean. I have this habit of "talking to" the people I am working on so as I was moving around fairly quickly my hubby was asking "Who are you talking to now??" I am not sure if he was amused or confused, but it was fun all the same and definitely helped me to grow in my sourcing skills.
Pip with 3 screens does that mean you get to do  profiles in the time it used to take to do one?  Good for you!
Absolutely. I can only imagine the wheeling and dealing going on behind the scenes. Get a hint of it, though.
Hahaha! No, I’m afraid it will become like a Mexican restaurant’s menu. Too many choices, blinded by the kaleidoscope of items! I can’t multitask like my wife can... with ease, it appears.

Congrats on the new all in one desktop PC! That is one way to get you to clean off the desk. Hope the links to Cherokee County, Texas where of help, if not let me know and I will try and find some more. If it was not for my grammar and spelling program I would be talking in Texan. Howdy folks!! :-)

Wow Pip congratulation on your new computer, I hope you will enjoy your new computer.

Wish you a great joy

Congrats on the new computer Pip! I'm glad it piks upp ur speling eroors  *giggle

We're doing Thanksgiving in Canada this weekend, so I hope you'll join me in a toast to the harvest and the farmers who grow such delicious bounty.  We can do it again in about 6 weeks with our American cousins.

I also think of Thanksgiving as a day for ancestors, partly because of all those pilgrims that I seem to be descended from, starting with Elder Brewster. Luckily, my mother's cousin wants to work on proving or disproving all the other Mayflower suggestions that WikiTree has offered up, so I'm free to bang my head on brickwalls in other lines.

But first, pumpkin pie cheeky

by Laurie Giffin G2G6 Pilot (104k points)
Laurie can you tell us about Canadian Thanksgiving traditions
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, Laurie!

Laura, what do you need to know besides 'pumpkin pie?'
Every thing Herb.  I host ours every year.15 to 30 people
Is it Thanksgiving in Canada this weekend?

I had no idea. I didnt realise it was so early!! :)

Monday October 8th - it IS this weekend...

OK Thanks for the heads up
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!
Hi Laura Bozzay, I think Thanksgiving came to Canada with our Massachusetts ancestors, so our traditions might be pretty much the same as the US.  Its about family, feast and fun. It just takes place a little earlier because of the northern climate.  If the weather is good, the boys might have a flag football game before dinner. If the weather is bad, there will probably be noisy card games. At my family's table, there's usually lots of storytelling. Dinner is usually roast turkey with stuffing, squash, smashed potatoes, and all the fixings. Various kinds of pie for dessert: pumpkin, apple, pecan, depending on what Grandpa likes.
Yep very similar Thanks for letting us know.  I normally do a 20 to 25 pound Turkey and a ham.  This year I am going to do stuffing with frozen spinach and bacon.   Family bring mashed potatoes...cranberry orange walnut salad...some kind of veggie...pumpkin...cherry.  pecan...and chocolate oatmeal pies.
Bacon in the stuffing, yumm!  Sausage is my secret ingredients for stuffing.

Hi Worldwide Cousins!

Sorry, no origami today.  Work has gotten a bit hectic with a 15 Oct deadline coming up, negatively impacting my patience and attention span!

Outstanding fall weather in NM, still low 80s (~28C) daytime in Albuquerque, but the leaves are starting to turn up at my place and I'm seeing feeling low 40s (~6C) at sunrise.

This was a pretty quiet week, what with y'all SourceaThonning.  And no fan mail from Buffalo.

Cheers,

Herb

Hello everyone, Hope you all are doing good. Laura so sorry to hear about your pinched nerve, hope you feel better soon. I heard from a new cousin today, waiting to hear back to see where abouts in the tree they are. I have been working on a home project that I will be giving to my oldest son for Christmas. Wow are those photos output to cloth

No not pictures Laura, but I do want to make one with pictures. My son wanted camo, so I went and bought some material that kind of represented camouflage. Woods, leaves, trees, dear. Put it all together in a log cabin quilt. I sure hope he likes it. I tried to enlarge it so you could see it better, but I was afraid to make it to big. laugh

It is neat looking I think the deer I mistook for a person
Thanks Laura. I am happy with the way it turned out.
Dallace, you’ve got the talent! When you get he one done with the pictures, be sure to share it with us!
I sure will Pip, and thank you. It will probably be a while but I will definitely share.
Very nice - lots of intricate work there.  I cannot image you son not liking this, especially when mom makes it with lots of woven in love.  I have quilts my sister made and i cherish them all.
Thanks Nicole . I agree with you I think he will love it. But my kids don't cherish things like you or I do.  Which makes me sad. But it's ok I love them and love making things for them.
And that is what moms do, they give and make things for their children, and, dads as well.  You never know, it may be the blankey he brings to bed with him for the rest of his life.  He just wont tell you.
I remember when he was little he had a favorite blankie he carried around the house. Would sit by the washer and dryer and wait till it was done. Lol then he would drag it around the house again.
My youngest granddaughter does that now.
Awww isn't it the cutest thing you've ever seen.
Hi Dallace, when I saw the picture I thought, "it looks like a log cabin bargello," and that's just about what it is.  Sometimes I use a pattern to make log cabin variations and sometimes they just fall into place.

Today I took second place at a Toastmasters Table Topics contest.  I was relaxed and fielded the impromptu question well.  Thankfuly I don't have to go on to the next level but can enjoy the rest of the month.

Tomorrow is a surprise 80th birthday party for one of my best genealogy friends.  It is very difficult keeping it a surprise because she is the type who suspects when something is afoot.  All I have to do is show up and celebrate (don't have to do any of the planning, LOL).  It is being held in the little cottage that our local gen society converted into a library. And my daughter said she would like to come.

Out of the blue a 2nd cousin once removed contacted me; she has just joined Wikitree and wondered if I had known her dad, whose profile I created.  I have offered her help and encouragement but haven't heard from her since.

People who find my profile offer me "stuff," and I offer to help them get started so they can enter it, and it seems as if they just "disappear" as well.  Someone offered me, for example, a tree that connects our family to Robert the Bruce.  This is way beyond my ability level.  Another offered me family Bible information that is more the kind of document I can flesh out, and yet that person also has not checked back in.  All I can say is that I will get to it when I can.

Yours faithfully, Margaret Summitt in Everett, Washington
Margaret, have a great time at the surprise 80th,  We did a surprise for my mom when she turned 75.  I must say there were a lot of people and there was a huge "SURPRISE"  she basically told us "Don't do that again" ! ! ! We all went oops!
Hi Margaret,  My sister is teaching me to quilt, and she always talks about the log cabin so I decided to try one. This is the third quilt I have finished. I haven't heard back the cousin that emailed me. I probably won't but that's the way things go sometimes. Hope you have a fantastic time at the surprise party.

Hi, I haven't spent a lot of time chatting on G2G but I am a lurker. ;-)

Today I received a message from someone who shares DNA with me; she is trying to discover the identify of her biological father, and it reminded me why I love genealogy research: it is a great chance to meet distant relatives and help each other uncover mysteries.

I've met (virtually and/or in person) a couple of cousins as I was trying to solve a family mystery of my own. My dad and I were surprised when, after he did a Y-DNA test and we compared it to two male cousins with the same last name, we discovered my grandfather had a different father than his brothers! A couple of my newly-discovered relatives generously offered to help me identify my great grandfather. They really helped me by sharing some of their research (and even meeting with nearby relatives to get more information for me).

I have also enjoyed helping a couple of others find relatives, including two first cousins of my mother. Additionally, I've grown closer to my wonderful mother-in-law as we've been working together to find out more about her heritage (she was adopted more than 70 years ago).

Have a great weekend everyone!

Lisa glad you posted.  That is great you are having success finding bio relatives

If. You are interested the Adoption Angel project is always looking for more angels

I'm glad you made it to the chat Lisa! And how exciting to find cousins that can work with you on that dna discovery and your research. I've met a few as well through this process and we email/chat weekly. I hope that you have the same progress with your mother-in-laws line.

Have a great weekend as well smiley

It's been a while since I've posted to the Weekend Chat, so I figured I should stop by.  Source-a-Thon was fun, made a bit more fun by adding Sourcing Selfies this time around.  There were quite a few responses but I thought there'd be more than what I saw on the official post.

Following Eowyn's suggestion during a S-A-T hangout, I decided to join the Pirates of the Pedigree online conference that begins October 15.  It would be great to know if anyone else is planning to attend-feel free to comment on this post if you plan to join.  I'm not sure how many events I'll listen to live, but at the very least I hope to join the Genealogy in Ukraine webinar on that Tuesday evening.

Excuse my ignorance, Greg - what is the Pirates of the Pedigree online conference?

The event runs from October 15 through October 20, and features a variety of webinars across various areas of genealogical research.  I've included a link here that includes more detailed information.

I did not do A selfie as I did the SAT one handed so it was not going to happen.    I am using auto fill to type this
I did not do a selfie because my hair is a mess and I am long overdue for a haircut!! :)
Have fun in the conference, man. Let us know how it goes!

Nice to see you here, too. How are ya?
Chris-Things have been pretty good for me, thanks for asking.  Weather is getting cooler, but it's autumn, so that's okay.  As long as it's not the dead of winter, I'm fine.  I'm also happy with the genealogical discoveries lately, so that's a plus.  How are you?
I'm good, man. Just working on a video and comic. Helping a 4th cousin spruce up her tree on Ancestry. Beefed it up. Gave it some polish. She's hoping to get into a DNA Circle. This morning she got into a couple. Not the ones she expected. I told her those things take time to cook.

Weather in NH has been weird. Warmish days. COLD nights. Won't be long before we start shoveling. Foilage is looking pretty, though!
I tried to upload a selfie but i think wikitree was soooo clogged it would not even allow me to browse.  So I put that picture as my primary on my profile.

Didn't get much done for the Source-a-Thon. I've had internet problems that didn't get resolved until this past Tuesday. Started a month ago and steadily degraded. My modem was failing but was still under warranty. They sent me a replacement - incompatible with my service. They sent me another one - the same incompatible model. The third one worked. I was told it was my fault that they were incompatible (they hadn't updated the database when my service was upgraded last March)

Also, last Saturday was the last Celtic Festival for the year. Nice, small one where all the profits go to local charities. The Festival band this year was City of Denver and District Pipe Band. We're fond of them since they wear the MacCallum tartan.

Making the last of the peach preserves for the year tonight, then we start on other canning/freezing for the winter. We haven't had a frost yet so lots of stuff still growing although slowly.

Genealogically, I've started working on certifying another UEL ancestor or two. Queries in to the PEI archives for a copy of a marriage license from 1787. That would be the last piece needed for one line (assuming they can find it). The others look like they need to wait until I get to Salt Lake City in December.

Is it Comcast? It sounds like Comcast. I wouldn't be surprised if it was!!!
No, CenturyLink. Comcast won't bring cable the 500-600 feet it would take to provide service. The are my only real option at this point.
Just don't get one of those Comcast issued modems. They are awful.
Having spent a large part of my working career dealing with communications equipment and knowing how all of this stuff actually works makes it even more frustrating. I've heard about Comcast problems and wouldn't really want them. I'm waiting for the city we are just outside of to extend their network to us. That might happen next year.

So maybe I should have hit answer instead of comment... but at any rate I wanted to also share thanks to WT I've reconnected with a first cousin I hadn't seen in over 30 years & found a 5th cousin I never knew I had. Great stuff!

Either way.  No big deal if you want to answer or comment.  The important thing is to post and have fun!
Congratulations on reconnecting with those cousins Tina!!

        Today is....

In the United States, National German-American Day is observed on October 6.

This German-American heritage holiday commemorates the 13 German Mennonite families from Krefeld who landed in Philadelphia.  These families founded Germantown, Pennsylvania on October 6, 1683.  The settlement was the first German establishment in the original thirteen American colonies.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Use #GermanAmericanDay to post on social media.

HISTORY

National German-American Day was originally celebrated in the nineteenth century. However, it fell out of favor during World War I.

Then in the 1980s things began to change. As is tradition, President Ronald Reagan made his world tour in 1982, which included West Germany. In the midst of a cold war and a divided Germany, the newly elected U.S. President opened his speech to the people of Bonn by relating the history of the 13 German families who founded a colony on American soil. He spoke of contributions, advancement, science and art and the honor to celebrate the German heritage that more than 7 million Americans claim.

The noblest objective of our diplomacy is the patient and difficult task of reconciling our adversaries to peace. And I know we all look forward to the day when the only industry of war will be the research of historians. ~ Ronald Reagan ~ June 9, 1982 ~ Bonn, Federal Republic of Germany.

To honor the 300th anniversary of German-American immigration and culture into the United States, in 1983 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed October 6 as German-American Day.  It was on August 6, 1987, that Congress approved S.I. Resolution 108, designating October 6, 1987, as German-American Day, and it became Public Law 100-104 when President Reagan signed it on August 18.  Proclamation #5719 was issued on October 2, 1987, at this time the President called on Americans to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.  It has been commemorated each year since with Presidential Proclamations.

So are you part German part American?? Share with us!! Or do you have ancestors from Germany that adds to your generation make-up?? Let us know.

I am German, but I have (even not so distant) relatives just in Pennsylvania. They aren't in Germantown, but in Lancaster, but that doesn't matter for me now :)
The German influence was a major factor in the US civil war

Enjoyed a nice walk two blocks down to the Oliver Hardy Festival going on today. Met up with my parents to then go see my Aunt at her booth. A bit disappointed in the food options this year; wanted something different and all they mainly had was BBQ and lemonade. Came home with a thing of boiled peanuts, mini doughnuts and a sausage dog.

I was pleasantly surprised my feet weren't killing me as I did the walking route the last 3 days. Logged in (by bedtime): 9 miles on Wed, 8 miles on Thurs and 6.9 miles Friday.

Trying to catch up on some of my shows today after going to see A Star Is Born with a co-worker. Then finishing Maniac from Netflix with my PIW Sarah and drink more wine.

Walking is good for you.  Sorry they did not have a good variety of food.

Walking is good but eventually made my back hurt with the bag and weight of it. LOL smiley

Oh that is how they think I pinched my nerves...walking on hard surface with a heavy bag slung over my shoulder.
I need a place to walk around here. Cars zoom down the street like crazy. What I try to do is walk down to one dead end, loop around and go down to the other one. Walking on the main road, though, isn't a good idea. My block is like a triangle and one of the legs is a main road.
