What's the basis for Richard Kirkland "probably" Scottish born?

The Kirkland surname is found in Scotland, so some theorize this family originated there.  I know of no further basis for it.  You can read the answer to general question with regard to Kirklands in Scotland here:

I know this is a very old post, but I came across it while researching some of this profile's suspected descendants. Richard's great-great grandson (i haven't solidified this line, but this is what was already present on WikiTree) is Jehu Chaney Kirkland, Kirkland-864. While I have found some secondary sources that say that Jehu's father was born in the Carolinas, according to Jehu's 1880 Census record, he states that his father was born in Scotland.

I know half of the time, individuals incorrectly reported their parents place of birth, but I just wanted to add my two cents.

I've just searched for Richard Kirkland births anywhere in Scotland between 1650-1690. (Searched on Scotland's People, the online presence of Registrar of Scotland with a selection of wildcard to take account of spelling variations) There were no births registered in this date range and with his son born in 1705 it's not going to fall outside this range. Did a second search from 1600 and found there were 2 Richard births:

1633 Edinburgh to Robert K and Helen Mein

1639 Glasgow to William K and Elspet Murray

both seem unlikely to be the Richard of this profile?

Elisha KIRKLAND born 1832 in Sequtchie Valley TN, Bledsoe Co TN stated in 1888 that his FATHER's family was ENGLISH.

There are several unrelated Kirkland lines in the U.S.  You can review them at the Kirkland Y-DNA project on FTDNA:  https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Kirkland-etc?iframe=yresults  The Kirkland line for the profile in this G2G discussion is my family line on my paternal grandmother's side.  Dr. Jim Peacock wrote a book several years ago, after spending several years traveling the country researching, on the line of Caleb Kirkland https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Kirkland-412  and his ancestors/descendants.  Jim never located any information to indicate from where the family originated prior to arrival in the U.S.

My Great Grandmother was Janet Smith Kirkland (Kirkland-1618) of Kilmaurs, Ayrshire, Scotland. There are several generations of Scot Kirklands in our line that you can trace using Scotlands People.

Ayrshire is in the South West corner of Scotland - which is where the Kilwinning Lodge of the Masons also is located.

Many people in that area also trace their family back to the (sic) Cunninghams, who were the "Earls" and "Lairds" of various towns in Ayr.

As I said, my Great Grandmother was a Kirkland, so I am very interested in any further research. Feel free to dig along the line and keep us informed.
