I have been having a terrible time trying to make sense of place names in Eastern Europe.  In addition to the languages (none of which I understand and sometimes can't even tell what language is being used), the country borders seem to have changed midnight on alternate Thursdays between 1850 and 1920 when the ancestors I'm working on were born there.

In desperation, I gave up trying to get it straight and just use whatever names I find on records at jewishgen.org, which organizes them by what I'm guessing are towns, counties, states within each country, although they use foreign words for the titles of these columns.  I also assume that the place names are right for the times, since these are transcriptions of actual records.  Then I try to enter place names in the profiles and use the language option to translate the choices to whatever language I think is right for whatever country I think I may be talking about.

J just corrected my grandmother's birthplace and also left 2 comments on my great grandfather's profile, giving me an amazing geography education.  J started by saying "you appear to have gotten a bit confused", but that is not correct - I had no clue what I was doing, so my thoughts could hardly have been confused when I didn't even have any thoughts at all!  Now, after the lesson, I think I may be confused but that's because I'm natively geographically challenged and J made a big breakthrough by getting me started on understanding what was going on over there.  That, alone, is an over-the-top achievement on J's part!!!

Words cannot express how much I appreciate your assistance, J!

Wow, my first WWT! Thanks!

After I ran out of space on the second comment on your GGF (I had zero characters left when I typed the final period), I decided to stop rambling. :-)
