Categorizing a jam industry

+2 votes
One branch of my family contains a lot of people who worked for the Chivers jam trade in Cambridgeshire, England, either as factory workers, or as farmers/market gardeners. I thought I might create a freespace page for Chivers jam and its workers, to help me see connections. But I didn't see a pre-existing category that seemed a perfect fit. I suppose I could add 'Jam makers' under 'Food processing and transport occupations', but I was really hoping to focus on this particular business, and the other categories seem to contain only individuals. What would the categorization project recommend?

So you would need a category for the company. It would be [[Category:Chivers Jam Company]] or whatever the name is and its parent category would be [[Category:England, Companies]]. For the occupations, [[Category:Jam Makers]] or whatever you want to name it. Use title case so please use upper case for the beginning of all words except "in" 'the" etc. The parent category is [[Category:England, Occupations]].

Aahh, thank you, I see companies are ultimately under Social Institutions. I'll do it as you say.

I would agree with Natalie, with a couple of changes:

I would also add [[Category:Occupations by Name]]. That needs to go on every new occupation category.

I would also add [[Category:Food processing and transport occupations]], because jam making is definitely a food processing occupation.

It seems to me that Chivers Jam company should also be connected to the Industries category hierarchy, although this part of the category tree seems to be much less developed. I'm thinking that the way it should go is from Chivers Jam company up to a new [[Category:Jam Making Companies]], and then from that up to the existing [[Category:Food Industry]].

I'd make that category [[Category:Jam and Jelly Making Companies]] because why have two separate ones? They are likely to be small categories anyway. I have an uncle that worked for Welch's.

I note that the [[Category:Food processing and transport occupations]] should be renamed if that's the way it is now. [[Category:Food Processing and Transport Occupations]]. I'll go look.

Thank you again, I've tried to do this. But I did notice that the 'England, Occupations' category asks for occupations prefaced with 'English', so I made English Jam Makers a subcategory of Jam or Jelly Makers. (We generally call what you call jelly jam, so it seemed better not to confuse the issue in the English name).
