Could someone please help with the translation of the marriage record of Francois Cote to Marie Magedeleine (Genevieve) Giguere. I believe they are the parents of [[Cote-2485|Joseph Cote]]. It would also be helpful if anyone knows the significance of the names Elisabeth Giguere and Joseph Belanger at the bottom (witnesses?).The record has me a bit confused as the PRDH-IGD record that led me to it is the marriage of Francois Cote and Marie Genevieve Giguere and the actual document looks like Marie Magdeleine Giguere. Also her parents are not apparent to me (who is Michel Racine?). Thank you in advance.

Translation is done (Thank you E and Danielle). Further work in progress. Help welcome but please check rest of thread first because E Martin has probably already taken care of it already. wink

Ahh, widow! Thank you so much for the help and for adding another word to my meager French vocabulary.

Am I correct in assuming that Ignace Giguere is the name of both the father and brother of Marie Madeleine Genevieve? Might her mother be Elisabeth signed at the bottom? or is that assuming too much? Perhaps a sister?

I think I found Francois' baptism

but they left out Francois as a child I think because his father in PRDH is XXXXX Cote. It is unclear in the baptism record but then Joseph Cote signed at the bottom of the record. Does that make sense? Might I actually be starting to figure this out?

Yes, this is the baptism  04 Nov 1778 of François Côté born 02 Nov 1778 (né d'avant hier = born the day before yesterday)

du légitime mariage du sieur Côté capitene (capitaine) de cette paroisse et de Thérèse Ferlant

PRDH ignored the signature and wrote XXXXX

Thanks once again. I had the birth date as 1812 from the 1851 census, corrected now with new source. Joseph Francois Cote.

and I just found Ignace and Louise Giguere in the 1851 census when I went to check the birth dates. Next door to Joseph Cote and Catherine Vezina.

Oops, looks like I've got a bit of cleaning up to do. Just a little bit though and now at least I know that this Joseph Coté is not the one I thought he was. I began this journey seeking the ancestors of this Joseph Coté whose profile I need to clean up a little bit since he's not the son of Joseph and Catherine. The Joseph I was looking for married Marie Phoebe Richard in either Canada or New Hampshire about 1859. This Joseph and Marie's daughter Marie Ellen (Cote) Dufresne is an ancestor of  a close DNA match (47 cM) for my Mom and matches on a segment that came from my French Canadian brick wall, the parents of my 2nd great grandmother Exilda (Cady/Cayer) Lacroix so I think there's a good chance that I'm connected to them somehow. It is possible that my connection is through a different branch of the match's family but I have many DNA matches who have Coté ancestors so it seems like the best bet. And in the process we managed to add some pretty good profiles to the tree, a productive oops at least.

I think I see where I went wrong. I know the Joseph I'm looking for was born in "St Anne, Canada" in 1838 according to his naturalization document. According to PRDH there were two Joseph Coté's born in places called Ste-Anne in 1838, the one we've been working on and another in Ste-Anne-de-la-Pérade. Maybe that's the one I'm looking for? Oh well, back to the books...

You are amazing! If only the good Rev. Bailey would have seen fit to fill in the back...

The direct link doesn't work but if you go to: https://www.familysearch.org/search/film/004242902 and image 961 the back is blank.

At least I did find a Cote married to a Martin in my search:

"New Hampshire Marriage Records, 1637-1947," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-6WS7-JJS?cc=1520640&wc=MJ7Z-929%3A1042667901 : 21 May 2014), 004242902 > image 1022 of 4997; Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics, Concord.

and interestingly his mother was Marie Richard.

I'll search the NH death records now to see if I can find them and maybe their parents.

Didn't even realize it but actually Louis Martin married Joseph's daughter Hattie in 1883: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FL6G-JL5

So, in Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré: On 19 April 1803 after publication of the 3 bans according to usage at the preachings of parish masses of this place and of St-Pierre Île d'Orléans, as it appears according to the certificate of Mr Boissonneault, curé of said St-Pierre, between François Côté, farmer in said parish of St-Pierre, of age son of deceased Joseph Côté and of Thérèse Ferland his father and mother, and Marie Magdeleine Giguières, of age widow of Michel Racine, in life farmer in profession, having found no impediment to this marriage, I undersigned curé received their mutual consent and have given them, upon advice and consent of their parents, the nuptial blessing according to the prescribed rite, and this in the presence of Joseph Côté brother and François Dymard uncle of the groom, of Ignace Giguières father and Ignace Giguières brother of the bride, and several other family and friends, of whom several have signed and others with the couple contracting declared not being able to when asked per requirements, Signatures:  Élisabeth Giguère, Joseph (Côté ?), __ (?), Chles Genest priest curé.

So, Madeleine is widow of Michel Racine, daughter and sister of Ignace Giguère, the Élisabeth Giguère who signs does not have a relationship stated so possibly a sister.  Her mother is not named.

As far as whether the bride is named Marie Magdeleine or Geneviève, records for this marriage afterwards show her mostly recorded as Geneviève or Marie Geneviève, with a single funeral of her child showing her listed as Madeleine.  She died on 14 Dec 1814 and was buried on the 16th in Ste-Anne-de-Beaupré under the name Marie Geneviève Giguère,  38 year old wife of François Côté https://www.genealogiequebec.com/Membership/LAFRANCE/acte/2521684 funeral IGD

François remarried on 1 Sept 1817 in St-Joachim to Geneviève Raymond, widow of Pierre Poulin https://www.genealogiequebec.com/Membership/LAFRANCE/acte/2284904 François's second marriage IGD

And yes, Joseph Côté is indeed their son.
