What happens to all the "Public" profiles that have errors? is PM notified?

When working on the Challenges to clean up data entry errors or omissions, there are usually large numbers of "public" profiles on the lists. Should we do something with these? Are PM's notified somehow that these problems exist?

The Profile Managers are not proactively notified.

The Suggestions list is updated every week, and its up to each Profile Manager to check the list on their own -- or not.

Those profiles that do have Profile Managers will have "Suggestions" lists that indicate which profiles have errors. It is up to the managers to fix those errors or not.

The orphaned profiles are up for grabs for anyone to fix.

There are weekly challenges to fix these errors - data doctors, bio Builders, sourcing sprints and connecting challenges - so we are doing the best we can to keep on top of them.

However you must remember that new profiles, especially those created from gedcoms, are being created every day and often the gedcom  created profiles are abandoned by their owners when it gets too hard to find sources or to fix them up.

NB Suggestions are not necessarily errors. They are just suggestions, and may well be erroneous, especially those stemming from comparisons with Find a Grave, where often people have guesstimated dates or entered information from poorly sourced family trees rather than input data from graves or parish registers. Personally, I would rather not have automated suggestions based on Find a Grave comparisons.
In some cases the information is from poor quality tombstones.

This is why it is important for all Wikitreers to check their Suggestions list regularly. The list is updated on a weekly basis.

This is a wiki so any of us can fix definite errors, typos, etc etc etc even if there is a profile manager. But if you are making major changes of substance and there is a profile manager, it might be courteous to send a tactful private message to the profile manager, or add a polite comment to the profile. With the Challenges, often the errors are not about the substance of profiles, but about things like typos or things being in the wrong field or a place name including the US for a period in which the US did not exist, or any number of other editorial things. I cannot imagine a profile manager objecting to these being tidied up.

Just seen Shirley Dalton’s answer on what “public” means and realise I may have read the question too fast. Apologies for that. As Shirley has reminded me, where the privacy option is set to “public”, only those on the trusted list can do the edits.

Do keep in mind that if by "public" you mean Public (green) privacy setting, only the PMs can do anything about editing these profiles. They are locked to anyone else. So there's nothing that we can do about any "suggestions" that appear for them.

If you are correcting errors and you come across a "Public" profile that you can't edit, drop a comment on the profile about the error/suggestion and an email will be sent to the PM. You'd be surprised by the number of PMs who have no idea that there is a suggestion report for their watch list or where to find it. Mentioning it on the profile with instructions on how to access it can help us all.

If I notice multiple from the same person I often message them with this.

"Please run your suggestions report and fix any errors it shows on your profiles you manage and update the status. If WikiTree+ is currently timing out due to lag, please check back later. These are the Errors that Data Doctors target and fix if the profiles are open. If the person is deceased, consider setting the profile privacy level (lock) to open or at least public."

Initially Manager can be reminded to correct the suggestion. You should also write a comment on Status button, so that we know after few months, that the manager was contacted and we probably have unresponsive manager and further actions can be taken.

If they show on my suggestion report and the correct entry is apparent, I enter it. Isn't that what the collaborative bit is all about?
